Why was this splendid Shakespeare film ignored and castigated in 1972?


In 1952 it would have been a strong contender for Best Picture. In 1972 it didn't even have an audience.

Perhaps the 1972 audience was simply tired of epic films about the ancient world, and wouldn't watch even this very well made production.

I think ultimately that's what it boils down to - it was 1972 and audiences just weren't into historical epics by that point in time. It's unfortunate by sometimes that's the fall of the cards.
