Is this film available on tape/DVD?

I had the opportunity to see this film once on late night television in the days when local stations actually did that sort of thing....does anyone know if there is a source for a copy of this film on either VHS or DVD? I would love to have it in my collectino of James Earl Jones films.

You're quite fortunate to have this movie no matter the condition. I had the pleasure of seeing it in 1972 and have been looking for it since the beginning of VHS and DVD. Would you be willing to share your treasure with me?

I have a copy on Beta, taped off-air back in 1981, and is not great but definitely watchable...I'd be happy to make a DVD for you! You can email me at [email protected].

Hello: I was fortunate enough to see this move a couple of times in the early 70's, but it hasn't been shown since and I've been asking people about it who were not lucky enough to have seen it. Trying to get a copy for myself, but can't come up with anything. Were you able to obtain any kind of copy? If so, I'd appreciate you sharing your good fortune. Thanks!

Does anyone have an e-mail address for Leonard Malten, the movie critic? He might be able to answer our question. I also saw the movie in 1972. I have heard rumors that the reason it never made it to VHS or DVD is because it is a very controversial movie. That was a few years ago. But now if the movie was released for the first time in this day and age it would be just another movie and released on DVD.

I just took a tour of the Smithsonian Institute Museum of American History in Washington. They have a special exhibit on the American Presidency. It was excellent! In the exhibit they have a feature on "The Presidency and Hollywood". There are displays of movie posters of the movies that featured presidential biographies or fictional movies involving presidents. One of the movies feature is "The Man" with James Earl Jones.

I remember seeing the movie back in 1972. I was 13 years old and at the time very involved in the Young Republicans Club. I have been trying to find a VHS copy of the movie but no luck so far. Anyone have any ideas?

I know someone mentioned writing Leonard Maltin, but what about writing Paramount Studios? They're the original distributor, and from what I can tell they're not in too bad a shape financially, so I think they could risk putting an old film out on DVD/VHS.

Paramount Studios

According to a section on their website, their main goal is film "preservation", so you'd think they'd have a copy in mint condition.

Please let me know if you do this and get a response (though I'm hoping it won't be a form letter).

I would definately check eBay for something like this.

It might be available on film or some other media.

I was touring the Smithsonian museums last month, and I too saw the poster for The Man in the American History museum. Very cool. Looked to be in mint condition.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I read the book by Irving Wallace. Wallace, in my opinion, was one of the greatest novelists of the 20th Century.

"The Man" is available from "Video Search of Miami" http://www.vsom.com
The have an amazing selection of unreleased videos. Note: they also carry hard adult films so be careful what you search for, although that part is usually separate from their main line selections.

I bought that one from HardToFind Films. The DVD packaging was great, but the movie itself was of very poor quality. The color is off, and there are what look like "hairs" all around the outer border of the film. It's not a few stray hairs, either. It's like batches of hairs.

I don't know what the technical term for that stuff is. Looks like hairs to me.

The audio is good, and you can see the picture clear enough to distinguish what's going on, but don't expect any enhanced VHS-to-DVD xfer quality. I've got VHS tapes recorded in EP that look way better than this. At least you can tell green from blue, and red from yellow on them. :/

If anyone ever comes across a better quality copy, PLEASE let me know. I'd even settle for a working, decent quality, original VHS tape. Thanks.
