Travers and McKenna

Does anyone know why Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna didn't do this sequel?

reply

Living Free was made six years later, by then they were busy with the Born Free Foundation they set up.

That may be true. But Travers did appear in a film in both '71 and '73 but not another appearance until 1980. I wonder if there was another reason.

reply

I wonder, too.

Saw this on TV the other day.

Virginia Mackenna was saying that they were horrified that the lions used in the film were being shipped back to Zoos after them having so much more freedom on the reserve (set). Her and Bill went public with their concerns and when she landed back in the UK a studio executive was waiting on the tarmac to meet her. Rather than "welcome home" it was "if the film fails then it is yours and Bills fault" referring to the publicity around the animals.

I get the feeling they never forgave the studio for that or for sending the lions back to captivity. I guess the lions from Living Free would have suffered the same fate and would have gone against their principals
