Lisa And The Devil, which is the director's original cut,is far better. It's very slow but beautiful and fascinating,a real work of art. House Of Exorsism, which cut some of the original movie and added an 'The Exorcist' type plot,is quite fun on a trashy level but is a total mess and far inferior.

indeed the original directors cut is much better

"Lisa and the Devil" is really quite good. "The House of Exorcism" demolishes the storyline Bava intended in the original cut but it has it's moments as an "Exorcist" rip-off.

Lisa and the Devil is a masterpiece of horror, and recommended for fans of quality cinema. House of Exorcism is a piece of crap, a horrible butchering of a work of art.

So...

Lisa and the Devil 10/10
House of Exorcism 3/10

The theater is like a faithful wife. The film is the great adventure, the costly, exacting mistress

I just finished watching the House of Exorcism (watched the 'Lisa' cut yesterday) & as far as artistic value & better storytelling, its DEFINITELY Bava's 'Lisa & The Devil'...But ya can't leave out House of Exorcism! Its fun, trashy, Grindhouse-ish goodness...more along the lines of Bruno Mattei or Umberto Lenzi output!

I like Lisa and the Devil better because the jarring switch off and on from the cheaply sort Exorcist rip off scenes to Bava's pretty gothic film in House of Exorcism, gives me a headache.

There aren't really any strong reasons why the movie flips back and forth, then there are other new scenes that make no sense. And all the vomit isn't really to my liking...I don't know, it makes a nicely shot film tacky. I feel House of Exorcism is insulting, sort of like the recuts of Brazil and Phenomena (Creepers) to both the director and the audience, making a good gothic horror piece a rip off of the Exorcist, just to make money, which I guess it did!

I'd see both and make my own decisions. There is a camp value to HOE...I won't doubt that, but it doesn't compare to the director's original vision by far!

when i got "house of exorcism", i had no idea that was an edited mess from another (this) movie. i agree that the edited movie was hard to follow, which make sense now, so i would say obviously this original is the preferred one to see.

cause of you,
here was richness and glasses half full,
missin you as my head is hangin low,
lonesome and hurting sittin by the radio,
and i keep remembering in the dark night,
sunny times but now you're out of my life,
and i'm without inspiration and light,
can't bring back the feeling you brought to,
its turned dim and gloomy cause of you.

I think Lisa and the Devil is better. The exorcism scenes aren't really bad to me, there's just no reason for them to be there. It's like two different movies were playing at once and they kept switching from one to the other. I think it would've been better if they just made a separate movie about an exorcism and let Lisa and the Devil stand alone.
