This one took some effort

Interesting movie, but I had a hard time warming up to either character. Towards the end, though, I really did find myself wanting to see more of their adventures in Spain.

I found their characters quite interesting for just that reason! It was a nice touch to allow the leads to be initially off-putting, by not smoothing off their rough edges & making them too comfortable for the viewers. I appreciated them all the more after having to stick with them & warm to them, as we sometimes have to do with actual "difficult" people in everyday life.

I MUST DISAGREE WITH THE INITIAL MESSAGE. I THINK "LOVE AND PAIN" IS A TRULY GREAT FILM, WITH MAGGIE SMITH CONFIRMING YET AGAIN WHAT AN INCREDIBLE ACTRESS SHE IS. tIMOTHY BOTTAMS IS ALO VERY GOOD, AND THE MUSIC IS ALSO BEAUTIFUL.

Perhaps.... but I found both of them such unlikable characters, that it took rather quite considerable effort on my part just to stick with the film. If I'd seen this film in the theater, I would have charged them to watch it through to the end. (BTW, posting in all caps does neither you nor your post any credit).

I love when characters are unlikeable to me and I change toward them. That's amazing if a movie can pull that off. These two were real, and misfits and imperfect. I think we get spoiled in today's movies with everyone being perfectly good looking and charming. Also there wasn't a lot of dialog, the movie relied on their shared experiences to show them coming together and the slow pace made it more real for me. Fascinating to see older movies. I thought Timothy bottoms was a great actor in this.

I understand what the original poster is saying about them being off-putting; I felt the same way at first. But they are both very eccentric and troubled people and I was curious to see what would happen to them. The film lets us see them as other people are seeing them; clumsy, short-tempered, agitated. But they become more comfortable with one another and they grow on us. It's like the nerdy kid in high school who seemed too weird to like, but once you got them talking they were all right.

I loved the movie. Maggie Smith was absolutely perfect. I'm surprised she didn't get any awards for this.

I think what makes this such a great film is that the characters are unlikeable at first. At the beginning I was very put off, but by the end I really cared what happened to them.
