New Version in Development

I just rewatched this movie on TCM, where they are having a Maggie Smith film fest. I can't remember if I saw it at the theater when it came out in 1973, when I was 12/13, but saw it on TV, when I was growing up. I remembered it fondly and it didn't disappoint. Maggie Smith and Timothy Bottoms (had a crush on him!) were both excellent in their roles.

I read that a new version of the movie, starring Nicole Kidman, is in development. I don't have IMD Pro, so can't see if there is anything more about it than that, here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1821526/?ref_=fn_al_tt_3

Who would you pick to star along with Nicole, in the Tim Bottoms role?

No way can Kidman bring to the screen what these 2 did. Pakula was no dummy in casting this film. Kidman and some youth would never be able to capture the ambiance of this film. They were so believable, natural and captivating.

Thanks for your input! Growing up in the 70's, with an abundance of really good music, I'm never happy when songs by my favourite bands are redone. The originals are perfection, so not only is there no need for a remake but often, the new one uses electronic enhancements of poor vocals and no one even plays an instrument.

I don't always mind movie remakes, though. Of course, there are classics I'd rather see left alone, but this movie didn't do well at the box office or have a large following, and the story is timeless, so I think it could be redone.

However, I don't agree with Kidman in the lead role, either. I would rather see someone like Cate Blanchett, who can show a wide range of emotions and is good at drama and comedy. But it is Kidman's production company that bought the rights for it, so that is who is doing it. I hope they choose an actor that will work well off of her performance and elevate them both and the movie.
