alan arkin

Just saw the film for the first time on my wife's recommendation. I don't know how I missed this being played on broadcast TV over the years. But I did enjoy it as a kind of time capsule of the early seventies.

I though Arkin's physical comedy was well done. He managed to invested the character with some sublety, despite the sometimes overbearing dialogue he had to deliver. The acting by all was good.

For some reason I enjoy the late-sixties/early-seventies portrayals of drug use. Often-times they seem like straight people's takes on it. I can well imagine the author flushing pot down the toilet twice paranoid about being caught.

Alan Arkin has always been one of my favorite comic actors, and I'm glad he finally got his due with an Oscar for "Little Miss Sunshine." In "The Last of the Red Hot Lovers," Mr. Arkin has perfect timing and presents his character as alternately sleazy and sympathetic – no small feat.

I also like the portrayal of the drug counterculture in mainstream films from this era. I think this film in particular was brave in having the lead actor experiment rather than just being presented as a square. Fortunately for him, the fishy smell on his fingers probably killed any residue of the joint.

This film is a overlooked comedy classic and deserves a much higher rating on IMDb.
