Just bought for $3 at Big Lots!
What a deal! This Neil Simon gem was rarely scene on TV (probably because of the subject matter) and was just recently released on DVD. A completely diaglogue/character driven film. No fancy camera tricks or special effects kids!
Although certain elements of LOTRHL seem dated, the theme is timeless. Barney's fear of death makes him reach out for love and affection that he thinks will make him feel alive. We can all relate.
The formula is textbook Simon. Like Plaza Suite, the scenes are episodic, happening in the same set. But each of the female characters are so blatantly different except for one feature: They are all extremely neurotic.
This is a formula that worked for many years for Simon on Broadway and may have become a bit stale by the time LOTRHL was released. Still it's an amazing bit of writing and a bittersweet look into the human need to be loved and live life.
