Phyllis sure didn't act like she was raped.

I mean after she was she just calmly asked if she could have her clothes back, she wasn't crying or anything.

You expect everyone to react the same after that? It's like death people react in different ways.

Good posts.

She's what you call, a "survivor". Its easy to crawl in a corner and become utterly useless once something bad happens to you, but she's one of the strong girls that don't really get sympathy votes.

Exactly, Phyllis is the fighter, the 'survivor', and Mari is the crawling in the corner type instead.

And I do have to agree it is stupid to think that every single woman has the exact hysterical response to being raped.

reply

This.

Unfortunately when real rapes cases occur, courts expect victims to act a certain way. That is when it gets all messed up.

Ned Beatty didn't act like he was raped in Deliverance either. He just said something like "I don't want the news of this getting out."

reply

A lot of people never knew I was raped just by looking at me either. You wouldn't know it looking at tons of rape victims (the day after or years after). Some people learn early to shut up and take it so they can live to see another day.

It's not good to give into stereotypes. Everybody's different and nobody knows everything.

It's entirely possible, since Phyllis had a reputation and lived in a bad neighbourhood, that she'd been in similar situations before. No idea if Wes thought that much into it, but it's possible.

In any case, she was tougher than Mari, who seemed to have been a bit coddled by her parents, and I think she was trying to protect her by not making it worse.

Excellent answer. I know exactly what you mean and although it's been years since I have seen this movie I vaguely remember that you are correct about the lives of these two girls.

reply

I was the same way. I've been through more than my share and never once broke down in front of anyone. To survive -- in almost any situation -- you have to try to keep a cool head. Phyllis did this. It's just too bad she was so outnumbered.

Can I trade in the children for more cash?

She was being calm because she was about to make a run for it & wanted to catch them off guard. She even said so when she whispered into her friend's ear.

reply

From the way Phyllis handled the situation, she seemed tough and resilient for the most part, only breaking up before she got stabbed. My theory is that she had dealt with similar situations having been living in a rough slum, which made her stronger.
