I spit on your grave was slightly better

*English is not my primary langage.

Beeing an avid horror fan, I decided to watch many video nasties that were missing to my culture for the last few weeks.

Then came the natural comparison between I spit on your grave and the last house to the left. In my opinion, ISOYG has a slight edge.

TLHTTL has more strenghts, but also more weaknesses. Let's start the comparisons :

Both are very disturbing. Rape scenes are a bit more realistics in ISOYG. I also have to give the edge to ISOYG for the revenge scenes. The booby traps in Last house are laughable at best, you don't quite understand the motivations of a well mannered middle age woman to provide her daughter's killer with a blowj*b. Some will say that the dynamic of having sex in ISPOYG revenge is poor as well, but for me, it makes sense.

As for actors, the main villain in TLHTTL is an icon and is absolutely awesome. The main villain in ISOYG also makes a pretty decent job. The retarded man in this last movie is a little bit too goofy, but nothing like the cops in last house who litterally break the mood. The lead actress in ISOYG also made, in my opinion, a better job than the teenage girl in last house.

As for the soundtrack, ISOYG has none, which increase the tension, while last house has some weird cool songs that don't always fit.

The most disturbing scene has to go to the bathtub scene in ISOYG.

There is also something disturbing, knowing that Craven did some porn prior to last house. Going from porn to sex assault movie...It is a little bit sick.

The camera work and editing is better in last house, while sometimes, you feel like the film has been cut, due to censors. But the cinematography in ISOYG is not that bad.

Both are important movies for horror, but I give a slight edge to I spit on your grave. And if you put this movie in an angle that all the revenge part never actually happened and it is a rape revenge fantasy all in the head of the heroine, the movie is even more powerful.

Finally, another argument that has nothing to do with my conclusion : The remake of ISOYG was actually great while the last house remake s*cked balls :)

What is your opinion ?

I really like the original LHOTL. Honestly, I thought Grave was rather boring. The rape scene was disturbing for maybe a few minutes, but then the whole film became so repetitive. And while I'll always remember the characters in Last House, I forgot the characters in I Spit almost immediately.

Just my opinion.

I also liked this one MUCH more! Way better acting and much more "funny" (as I guess was inted by good old Wes!). I Spit..... was pretty boooooring and forgettable.

reply

You have a great insight and I agree with most of your comments. However, while there were actually things going on in LHOTL, nothing was really happening in the original ISOYG. The violence in ISOYG is better, but for the most part, ISOYG is just too boring.
However, I rather liked the remake of ISOYG and the last house on the left remake was just okay. If you want to see my ISOYG review, check out this link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sb6UOAISreE

I thought 'I Spit On...' was MUCH, MUCH better than this movie.

I Spit On Your Grave was a horrible movie! At least the original was, horrible acting lack of a score, rape scenes were way to disturbing and drag on as if we didn't get the point of the horror. Music score oh wait that's right there isn't one, goofy bad guys and a herione who at first you feel for until she sort of whores herself to get some of the revenge. However The I Spin OnYour Grave remake is a great movie and I praise it as one of the best modern horror films.

I feel that the original Last House On The Left is better then it's own remake slightly and certainly better then the original I Spit On your Grave. Sympathetic characters especially Sandra Cassel's character. Evil character such as David Hess's character. I just felt the emotions during this film and although not crazy about the score it works. Rape scenes are disturbing yes but it doesn't drag on to long...it cuts away at the perfect time and is right to the point.

ISOYG = Almost weird fetish movie with bad acting
LHOTL = Creepy story that at times feels real

Although I encourage those who can handle to see the ISOYG remake it's so good

Last House on the Left is a cult classic. I bought it on DVD, because I saw it in the early 80s and never forgot it.

The problem with i spit on your grave is that it is hopelessly misogynistic, the rape scene which is shocking but necessary to the plot is then extended into a further scene which is entirely unnecessary. The writer is I spit on your grave is also presented as being an intelligent and resourceful women, once she has been raped however the only thing she is able to use to her advantage is to use her sexuality to seduce the men, as if this her only means to punish these men.

The reason The last house on the left is better is that it is about violence being used as an end to punish violence, however in the end the family is arrested by the police and the films moral core is revealed, Last house clearly highlights that any violence is wrong and vigilante justice must be punished. I spit ends with her simply driving away on her boat, the difference between the two endings is the reason why the last house on the left is the better film.

At least the original ISOYG knew what it wanted to be.

As for the characters in the original LHOTL, I felt no sympathy for Mari or Phylis whatsoever.

"As for the characters in the original LHOTL, I felt no sympathy for Mari or Phylis whatsoever."

Why is that? There's plenty of character building in the first act. In fact, I find their characters and the dichotomy of their friendship to be fascinating, thoughtfully developed and, frankly, rather sweet.

For example, Mari telling Phyllis that she would like to "make it" with Bloodlust in a bunch of cotton, and Phyllis's reaction ("It's Bloodlust, man, like they're crazy!") is not only amusing dialogue, it serves to establish the contrast between Mari's naivety and Phyllis' comparatively mature worldview.

I personally find it interesting that Phyllis appears to be on the verge of world-weariness, having endured a youth in the slums of the city, and is drawn to Mari's childlike innocence as a means by which to vicariously see the world anew through the eyes of someone who hasn't witnessed the horrors of humanity.

In turn, Mari is drawn to Phyllis because she is eager to become a full-fledged woman and views the slightly older Phyllis as a sort of mentor; the dialogue in which Mari revels in the fact that her breasts had filled out that summer informs us that she is on the teetering point between adolescence and adulthood, and is ready to embark on such endeavors as sexual experimentation and drug use... but we are reminded that she is still the emotionally underdeveloped girl celebrating her sweet sixteen when she enthusiastically sings: "Rodney Johnson!" It's clear during these scenes that Phyllis enjoys being in the company of Mari and her gleeful, untainted youthfulness, which Phyllis appears to have missed out on entirely.

LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT is a shockingly well-written movie, especially where the characters of Mari and Phyllis are concerned. Granted, Craven was fully aware that he was making a low budget horror film, so he knew he had to give us as much character development as possible in a very short time so as to not bore his target audience (teenage drive-in patrons). I feel he achieved that, and expertly so, but because the construct of his narrative moves at such a necessarily brisk pace it does require the viewer to be focused on details and desiring of extreme emotional impact.

In summing up, this is a serious attempt by an intellectual novice filmmaker to make a complex and thoughtful yet marketable and broadly palatable micro-budget thriller-cum-cautionary tale for freedom-seeking youths in the post-'Nam/Manson era. Craven admitted to have grown up in a violence-laden urban environment and was no stranger to acts of violent aggression, and it shows in this movie. It's the work of someone who understood - and was deeply fascinated by - the psychology of people who enjoy perpetrating acts of violence and cruelty. As a meditation on violence and sadism, it poses a great many questions to the viewer, one of which is: How big a divide is there between those who commit violent acts for no good reason and those who commit them for what they feel are very good reasons?

It's an absolute masterpiece, warts and all.

It's an absolute masterpiece.

Yeah, sure it is.

I loved them both. They are both true horror classics that deserve every bit of praise they receive. Both films are brutal, realistic, and very powerful even today decades after they were made. I can't choose one over the other because they are both brilliant in my opinion.

I've been waiting for you, Ben.

I suspect that because you've asked this on The Last House board, you'll get more people who prefer this.

Personally, I'm with the OP. ISOYG felt more shocking to me, even if the acting in the early assault scenes weren't always top notch, the sheer length of it made it disturbing. And I feel that there was a guy with mental difficulties joining in reluctantly made the scene more difficult. You felt both sympathy with him and anger at him at the same time. The first 40 minutes or so of ISOYG is a difficult watch, and having only watched it once, I'm not sure I can sit through it again. All of this does, however, bring sympathy with Jennifer Hills. And makes you almost root for her, despite the fact that you know you shouldn't. The one thing about ISOYG is, it's almost too efficient in what it does. Watching the film makes you wonder if films like this should be used for entertainment purposes.

LHOTL felt watered down a bit. Despite some of the scenes looking more realistic, you felt like they didn't go as far. Which in one respect was a relief, but in another respect you didn't feel the same sympathy with the characters. So, it just felt a bit blah somehow.

And the comedy cops didn't help. I don't know if they were there to lighten the mood, but they seemed inappropriate somehow. The bit where they are climbing on the chicken truck and silly music is playing really killed the mood the rest of the film was spent setting up.

ISOYG was a hard watch, because it was so efficient at creating that feeling of disgust it was going for even 40 years later. LHOTL just feels a bit flat, but because it isn't as good.

I agree on most points, Seph. While I enjoy both films, ISOYG is the better of the two.
