Did this actually happen

Is it really based on a true story or just inspired by one. Just curious with how the movie started with some text, I dont beleive some of them.If its based on something or inspired on anything can you mention on what?

reply

It was not or if it was it is so far back in history nobody would know because although this was I guess an 'original' idea for Wes Craven, the storyline is actually a remake of an older movie called The Virgin Spring.

According to audio commentaries by Wes Craven AND Sean Cunningham it's not based on any true story. That was just added to hype up the movie. And (as a previous poster noted) it was loosely (VERY loosely) based on Bergman's "The Virgin Spring".

A lot of horror movies around that time did the same thing to make the audience feel more unsettled. Imagine being a kid in the 1970s and having to walk home from the theater after seeing this. I believe Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the most notable movies to employ the whole "based on a true story" thing. They still use the same tactics today, albeit modified somewhat. Look at The Blair Witch Project, I remember the Sci Fi Channel doing a lot of promoting for the movie and it was shot as a documentary with "experts" weighing in on what happened. And of course more recently Paranormal Activity with its "Youtube Vlog" type cinematography.

Nova, please stop saying this was a *remake* of The Virgin Spring. It was inspired by the film and was not a remake.

Correct. Even Bergman's film had been based on an old Scandinavian ballad.

Yes, this is based on a true story; the story of Sir Tor.

I came here to ask the same thing. I watched this for the second time last night. I first saw it years ago and forgot the beginning said it was true.
