You would think the producers would have had the common sense to keep the cars as close as possible(just buy like 6 similar beetles at the same time/new or used/and outfit them identically).

I agree! i think one of the things that irritates me most about the makers of these films is that they treat the audience like idiots, ie 'any old yellow beetle will do, no one will notice the differences'.
At least with this 2nd film the basic model of Bug seemed to stay vaguely consistent, unlike the first and 3rd movies.

In terms of watchability, i think only die-hard VW obsessives like myself can stomach the whole thing as you're likely to get bored to death by most of the talky scenes (not to mention become terribly confused as to what exactly the plot is, it's hardly crystal clear).

Some of the stunts are ok, but some just fall flat like the floating car bits. It sort of look ok from a distance, but up close the platform it's sitting on (seemingly made out of wooden pallets) is very obvious.

And the terrible bit when the villains are spun around on dudu's front seats is too terrible for words!

They got better in the 3rd film.

You all miss the point entirely:

this movie was low budget made in the early 70's.
Low budget.
Early 70's.

Besides: it was a fun movie for audiences at the time; just a good sunday-afternoon tv-movie. Dude movies were quite popular in their days.

And for kids, it's magic. So don't take away the magic for kids, but just enjoy a nice low budget movie.
