Gold pieces?

Weird question maybe, but the "gold pieces" in this movie series look like small white bricks with Japanese writing on top. Is "gold pieces" a correct translation? Did the 'bricks' contain pieces of gold? Or were the bricks some sort of portable token that could be traded for real gold? They don't look anything like the pictures of old Japanese money that I've seen.
