didnt they have stuntwomen then?

the one and only thing that annoyed me in this movie, is that they used men stunt men portraying Raquel in her dangerous scenes.I mean its obvious its a guy with a stupid wig and not a girl.Didnt they have stuntwomen in those days?i guess they didnt.

It was NOT a stunt guy doing Raquel's dangerous scenes. It was actually a female Roller games skater, by the name of Judy Arnold, lead female skater of the Philadelphia Warriors. She was a blonde woman in real life, but built similar to Raquel in stature. They did put a wig on her, to make her look like Raquel and she was more athletic than Welch. She was an awesome skater and I, as a fan, recognize her moves on the track. Google the name Judy Arnold and see for yourself. By the way, Judy retired from Roller Games and eventually became a church woman.

Jackie Burdette also had a roller games skater doing her stunts. She was Sally Vega a popular skater. There is one shot in the movie where they show Sally face on and you can tell it's her and not the woman playing the charactor.

Do you know what skater was doing Horrible Hank's skating stunts? I didn't recognize his style. Maybe it was Charley O'Connell or John Parker?

reply

From what I remember he didn't have a stunt double. Other then the two leads everyone did their own skating.

Are you a former derby skater Dave? I remember Dave Pound (now deceased) and Dave Marez from the Pioneers.

A few years back I got an email from Erwin Miller, who teaches skating in Florida. He updated me (at the time) on what old Warrior skaters were doing. My favorite was Mike Gammon.

Yep, I was a skater. I started in the mid-70's..stopped in late 70's. Then when it started up again in 1995 in L.A. I go into it again. There have been five leagues in L.A. that quickly came and went so not much happened other then a couple games in each but I did the training school in all of them. Then I skated for the ARSD numerous times. I've been on the Outlaws, T-Birds, Red Devils, Bombers and chiefs. I quit because I obviously was getting too old and my back was a complete wreck.

Oh my! I have so many questions about Roller Games that I'd love to ask. I was a big fan of the Philadelphia Warriors (later War-cats). I saw many games in person and met many of the skaters at that time. Judi Sowinski and Donna Foxx used to go to a local bar that I bussed. Was Ronnie Raines a nice person or not?

reply

Ronnie was a good guy but he was definitely as crazy as you saw him on the track at times. Sadly, Judy Sowinski passed away a couple months ago. Everybbody loved her and she was an amazing skater.

I did know Judy passed away from cancer. She remained in the Philadelphia area after hanging up her skates. She also helped teach the local rollergirls.

Buddy Atkinson Jr was a fire marshall in Florida and he and his wife Drew are retired. Their son and grandchildren are skaters.

I heard Jim Trotter became a bus driver in Philly. Little Richard Brown continued skating even in the Florida league on TNN. Mike Gammon and Judi McGuire divorced; Judi married Charlie O'Connell. Mike became a trucker for a while, but became injured from a fall from a balcony, where he broke both legs and is now permanently disabled.

There's a video on Youtube of Judy at the training school teaching the skaters. It's called 'This time it's real'. Richard Brown is still skating now with the ARDL league based in San Fransisco. He skates with the bombers and I tell you, for his age he is in amazing shape. After many years of not wanting to have anything to do with derby, Charlie and Judy had their pictures taken so people could check them out. Not to sound mean but you would never even know it was them. They're unrecognizable in their old age. Many skaters still look basically the same even though they're older. Some though not so lucky. I recently saw a photo of Jerry Catell at the derby reunion and I would never have known it was him if I wasn't told.

That's interesting because I too thought she was a man.
