I would consider myself somewhat of a SME on JJ. If you truly like..no love Jeremiah Johnson then you must read "The Mountain Man" by Vardis Fisher. It will fill in a lot of blanks not covered in the film. Liver eatin Johnson was a real life character....buried in what is if I recall Long Beach, Ca. or there abouts....

I could literally fill this comment area with fun facts and trivia, I would extend an offer for fans of this saga to give me a shout. I would be happy to answer any questions if possible.

How are some of these neat trivia questions as a primer...
What was the name of JJ's squaw.....
Who was the Tiger Lady.....
In a very short clip in the movie JJ was seen biting the ear off a warrior...why
How did JJ get the name of "Liver Eatin Johnson".....
Did you notice how JJ could tell one of the warriors was coming up after he was shot of his horse....
What war did JJ fight in....
What tribe was after JJ and why....
So why did other tribes try and "git 'im....

I saw the post on the Charlton Heston/Brian Keith film...and no disrespect, but that was such a total bogus movie on true mountain man living....

I would HIGHLY recommend the mini series "Centennial" based upon a book by Jmae Michner. Very accurate, even for a made for TV series...

Hope to hear from some more fans...oh and by the way...JJ is my great great great uncle :)

I just returned from Cody, Wyoming where I visited Old Trail Town. This is where Bob Edgar had John Johnston's ( Jeremiah's ) remains moved to from Calif. I went to the Library there and made copies of all the newspaper articles supporting this event that took place in 1974. Redford was a pall bearer and there were many pics showing the actual ceremony all the way up to after the remains were lowered into the new site. Musta been 2500 folks on hand for it. I talked to many folks who were part of this including Mr. Edgar and having been a JJ fan since the movie, was in awe of being there. I have owned both books you reference in your post for some time. All I can say is, while meditating at the monument they put up for him, I was quite choked up.

Yehtahay back atcha!!

P.S. I left a post for you a few days before I left for Wyoming.

I am a big fan of Liver Eatin' myself. There is another good book that was punlished in the forties that is titled just "Liver-Eatin' Johnson." The author used Liver-Eatin's old trapping parter White Eye Anderson for most of his information. My question, since you guys seem knowledgable, where can I find more information on Crazy Woman and her husband, if I remember rightly, Mad Mose?

Like you, I'm somewhat of a SME on JJ, as I minored in cinema in college (1970-1977) and analyzed JJ as part of a class because it is one of my very favorite movies. And, yes, I read Fishers book also. One question about the movie I've never been able to answer is, was the soundtrack ever made available to the public? I've been looking for it for thirty+ years without success. What is your SME knowledge on this issue?

I have the LP version of the soundtrack. It took me years to find it also. Somewhat disappointing in that it leaves out some of Tim McIntyres narrative singing but good none the less.
I don't have a record player anymore and if you're interested, I'd consider offers.
