The Background Music

I loved this movie and I have a copy of it. I watch it often. I really do like the background music. I love to that piano. The music sounds so neat and peacefull. With the background music movies would be very boring.

Have a great day,

I completely agree with you about the music. I have loved this film, and its music, since I saw it new in 1972 while in college, and I minored in cinema! This music has a "new age" quality to it that pre-dates the New Age music genre by a decade. If you like this type of piano music, try listening to work by pianists David Lanz, Michael Jones and George Winston (in this order). These are all New Age musicians that often play "neat and peaceful" sounding original music. I would especially recommend a piece by David Lanz called "Sun Showers".

I have searched high & low for the soundtrack for this film without success. I cannot even find mention that such a soundtrack was ever even offered for sale. For many years I searched record stores and such, and now, I search websites galore, all without success. If you ever hear of this soundtrack being available ANYWHERE, please post it to this site. I will do the same if I ever come across it.

Happy Viewing,

Dave Martin

Thanks for your reply back and yeah I loved Jeremiah Johnson and there was not one thing and I did not like about that movie and I watch it often

What did you like about Jeremiah Johnson? I like the part where Jeremiah met up with that old guy who was hunting for grizzly bears and he collected the claws. I think his name was BEAR CLAW CHIS LAP and I that bald headed guy and the boy he met when he walked in where all those kids had been killed by the Indians. Yeah that was one good movie.

Have a great Sunday afternoon,
Lester A. Vineyard

Here is a quote from Jeremiah Johnson

Jeremiah says. "Do you ever get lonely?"

Bear Claw says this " YOU MEAN AND ALL NIGHT WOMAN"

Then Claw says this "I PACKED ME A SQALL FOR NINE YEARS BUT I TRADED HER FOR A HONKEN GUN"

Hey I wish I had a way of getting the Sound Track. I sure would like to have it. Maybe someone out there can help us out.

Thanks,

Dear Les Margo:

I couldn't agree with you more about this movie. My father took me to see it when I was about thirteen. It was the first time I ever heard of Robert Redford. My favorite bit of b.g. music was the occasional guitar accompaniment of the balladeer.

But, with respect to Bear Claw's dialogue? The exact phrasing was:

"You mean, a FULL-TIME NIGHT WOMAN?"

and: "...I traded her for a HAWKEN gun."

Hawken being the brand name for the line of big-bore flintlock rifles developed for bagging elk, buffalo, and (sometimes) bear.

Hi how are you? They stopped making the soundtrack when it was still on records. there were never any cds made of the soundrack. I actually bought a cd of the soundtrack though for $70 from a guy that digitally remastered it off of the record onto cd. It sounds great no cracks or pops and it has every track off of the movie. if you want I will send you my copy for $40 let me know I could send it out tomorrow. thanks and take care email me at ltwempire11@yahoo

I have the LP version of this soundtrack. It is by John Rubenstein, son of composer Arthur Rubenstein. Also by Tim McIntyre (who played nasty Huey in Brubaker and is the son of John and Jeanette Nolan!) I looked for it for many years. I might be interested in selling it if there is interest. Totally agree about the music. I actually had this on the other night but was on my computer for the whole movie, so I was just listening to the movie, not watching, and I thought, "This could be the best soundtrack I've ever heard in my life." Surprised it didn't win any awards.

Does anyone know what the words/poem/song recited in the background are, or where they can be located. Something about "The day that you wonder is the day that you lose, the day that you tarry . . .". I've looked all over and I can't find a name, or a complete version.

I found the words to the song, but haven't found the music as yet. The word is wander instead of wonder. Here it is:
Jeremiah Johnson Song Lyrics

Jeremiah Johnson
made his way into the mountains.
he was bettin’ on forgettin’
all the trouble that he knew.

The way that you wander
is the way that you choose.
The day that you tarry
is the day that you lose.

Sunshine or thunder
a man will always wonder
where the fair wind blows,
where the fair wind blows.

The trail was wide and narrow.
The eagle or the sparrow
showed the path he was to follow
as he flew.

A mountain man’s a lonely man
and he leaves a life behind.
It ought to’ve been different
but you often times will find
the story doesn’t always
go the way you have in mind.
And Jeremiah’s story was that kind.

An Indian says you search in vain
for what you cannot find.
He says you’ve found a thousand ways
of runnin’ down your time.
An Indian didn’t scream it.
He said it in a song
and he’s ne’er been known to be wrong.
He’s ne’er been known to be wrong.

The way that you wander
is the way that you choose.
The day that you tarry
is the day that you lose.

Sunshine or thunder
a man will always wonder
where the fair wind blows,
where the fair wind blows.

And some folks say
he’s up there still.
Jeremiah Johnson
made his way into the mountains…

This is wild -- I've probably seen this movie more than any other in my life, but hadn't seen it for years. Saw it again the other night and found myself wondering, once again, about a sound-track... The wonder of the Internet! Great to get the words to the song, anyone know who sang it? Maybe the person with the album has that info?

This is my all time favorite movie. It's extremely accurate in details. Such as language, clothing, etc. The intro music song gives me the chills. It continues until Johnson is fumbling with the fish and the mighty Indian on the horse is watching. Then a powerful piano chord. How about when he finds Hatchet Jack frozen holding his Hawkins rifle. Notice the sound of an earie fiddle sounding as though it is bouncing off the snowy mountains. Or, when he is fighting the Crow, only after he is pulled into the ignorant white mans ways, saving some religious people stuck with their wagons. He did not want to go through the sacred burial ground. They did and he paid the price. There's a nice accoustic guitar going on while they show tid bits of his battles. This movie comes full circle. The intro fishing scene and the end when he returns to the same stream and sees the same Indian on his horse and that mighty hand gesture as though all the fighting is over. This is a must see movie.
