QUESTION (spoilers)

******spoilers ahead!!**********\\\

ok, so i would just like to have a few things cleared up.

At the beginning, when Jeremiah is fishing, he meets a native American with red paint. We later learn he is the chief of the Crow Indians. He exchanges gifts with them and smokes the peace pipe. They are friends/allies.

Then he meets the bald guy. The bald guy puts a scalp (unknowingly to Jeremiah) on Jeremiah's horse when they meet a group of Flathead Indians. My first question: Is this the scalp of a Crow INdian? If so, do the Flatheads not like the Crows?

SO now, Jeremiah is friends with the Flatheads and recieves the Cheif's daughter as a wife.

Fast forward to the winter when the white troops come to ask him to help them find stranded white settlers. He leads them through a Crow burial ground. When he returns he finds his wife and adopted son murdered.

It is assumed that the Crow murdered his family. So his passing through their burial ground cut any ties of friendship?

Also, after the murder, when he sees a group of INdians he rages into their camp and kills almost all of them. I assume this is as vengence for his family. BUT these indians have way different face paint to that of the Crow. The Crow cheif had half of his face painted red, and when it showed a group of Crow with the cheif (and when Jeremiah and the bald guy stole the horses), they just had streaks on their faces. This camp of INdians that he kills all had their entire faces covered with white paint. There wasn't any resemblence between their face paint and the Crow's. So I'm wondering, was it really Crow Indians that he killed that time? And if it was not, does that mean that the Crow Indians really didn't kill his family?

After he kills that group of indians, he is regularly attacked my individual indians. Are these attacks made because he killed that one group of indians? IF his family was killed by the crow and IF that group that he killed were the Crow, are these attacks further revenge for the burial ground tresspassing, or are they revenge for the group killing, or both? IF the group he killed WASN'T Crow, are the individual attacks still from the Crow (since the face paint looks similar to what the Red-faced cheif was wearing), OR are they from the tribe of indians that he killed in that group, as a revenge for his killing?

I know this is very long winded and confusing, but I want to know. Lastly, if the Crow did kill his family and they WERE the ones attacking him, why is the Cheif still amiable in the end (yes I know one of the reasons would be that they are friends and they understand, but anything more? - I mean, they DID kill his family). And my LAST question is basically is it really certain that the Crow killed his family? I mean, I know that the burial ground trespassing is a HUGE deal, but so is smoking a peace pipe. Also, Jeremiah and the cheif seemed to share some sort of understanding. So was the trespassing enough to overweigh all the other positive aspects?

I guess I really know the answer, but it just hurts me, because he was friends with the Crow and they ended up killing one another.

OK IM SURE THERE WILL BE SOME EXPERTS WHO BLAST MY THEORIES BUT WE R ALL ENTITLED TO OUR OPINION, YOURS WAS A CRACKER OF A QUESTION OR SHOULD I SAY QUESTIONS BUT HERE GOES , WHEN THE CROW CHEIF SEES HIM AT THE START HUNGRY WET COLD AND FOOLISH IT SYMBOLISES JEREMIAHS JOURNEY START AND THE IRONY THAT THE CHEIF WILL BE THERE AT THE END OF HIS JOURNEY AS WELL BUT BY THEN THEY WILL BE DIFFERENT PEOPLE, AND THAT JOURNEY IS OF HIM STARTING AS A BLUNDERING GREENHORN WITH THE CHEIF AS HIS WITNESS AT THE END ONCE AGAIN THE CHEIF IS PRESENT BUT THIS TIME TO ACKNOWLEDEGE HIM AS A GREAT MOUNTAIN MAN AND OF COURSE INCREDIBLE WARRIOR, REMEMBER DEL SAYS TWO IMPORTANT THINGS, ONE IS A TRIBES WORTH OR STRENGTH IS DECIDED BY THE STRENGTH OF ITS ENEMIES AND ALSO IN ANSWER TO THE SINGLE ATTACKS BY THE CROW, AFTER ONCE SUCH ATTACK IN THE PRESENCE OF DEL HE STATES" THATS HOW IT IS , ONE AT A TIME LIKE THAT" WITH WHICH JEREMIAH GRUNTS AGREEMENT AND DEL SAYS " YOUR LUCKY TWASNT APACHE THEY WOULD OF SENT FIFTY WARRIORS. The repisal attack against his family HAD to be in relation to the gravesite desecration because the types of attack were different , one a 6 man war party including medicine man to kill his family and then one lone warrior at a time, obviosly a philosophy issue within the CROW culture and one dictated by pride no doubt, YOU SEE THE SADNESS YOU FEEL RELATED TO THE MIXED FEELINGS JEREMIAH HAD IN THE RESCUE MISSION, HERES A MAN WHO HAS EMBRECED THE LAND AND THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE LIVED OFF IT FOR EONS YET HE STILL HAD THE COMPASSION OF THE WHITEMAN TO SAVE THE FOOLISH SETTLERS WHO HAD GOTTEN THEMSELVES IN TROUBLE, REMEMBER HE TOLD THE SOLDIERS THE GRAVESITE WAS A PLACE OF GREAT MAGIC AND HE WANTED TO GO AROUND BUT ONLY AFTER THE SOLDIERS SAID THE SETTLERS WOULD DIE BY THEN HE GAVE IN, JEREMIAH FACED A PARADOX, THE RUTHLESS MOUNTAINS AND THERE INDIAN KEEPERS HAD LET HIM LIVE MAINLY BY RESPECTING THEM THROUGHOUT HIS TIME, ONLY WHEN HE DISSRESPECTED THEM DID THEY TURN, YET HE WAS IN FACT DOING THE DECENT SENSIBLE THING BY SOCIETIES STANDARDS, SO YES IT WAS SAD. SO IN SHORT THE CROW AS WERE MOST INDIANS VERY MYSTICAL RSPECTFUL PEOPLE, SO YEAH BREACHING THE SACNTITY OF THE GRAVESITE DID MEAN THE GLOVES WERE OFF AND A STRONG MESSAGE NEEDED TO BE SENT, JEREMIAH OF COURSE SENT HIS OWN MESSAGE BACK TO THEM AND THEN THE GAMES BEGAN, THE ENDING WITH BOTH HIM AND THE CHEIF WAS GORGEOUSLY DONE SERVING AS I SAID EARLIER AS THE COMPLETION OF NOT ONE BUT MANY CIRLES OF JEREMIAHS LIFE AND THOSE ENTWINED IN IT. THE CHEIF ACKNOWLEDGING HIM AS A GREAT WARRIOR WHO HE HAS DECIDED IS SO GREAT IT IS A WASTE OF TIME AND YOUNG BRAVES TO KEEP SENDING LONE HITMAN TO DO THE JOB, THE BEAUTY IS SO DEEP BECAUSE THE CHEIF SWALLOWS HIS AND HIS TRIBES PRIDE BY EXTENDING THE HAND OF RESPECT TO HIM, OBVIOUSLY THEY COULD HAVE JUST SENT MORE MEN IN NUMBER BUT THAT WOULD BE CHANGING THERE CULTURE OR PHILOSOPHY TO DO IT, AND WHILE JEREMIAH IS A FORMIDABLE OPPONENT NOT GREAT ENOUGH TO CHANGE A TRIBES HISTORY OR BELEIF SYSTEM.ALSO NOTE THE DESPERATION IN JEREMIAHS FACE AS HE REACHES OUT TOWARDS THE CHIEF HIS BODY MIND AND SOUL SO TIRED FROM THIS WARRING LIFESTYLE HE HAS BEEN SUBJUECTED TO, TRULY MAGNIFICENT, IN RELATION TO FACEPAINTING, AS IS THE CASE WITH MOST INDIAN TRIBES FACE PAINTING CHANGED DEPENDING ON TASK, PAINT WOULD CHANGE FOR RELIGIOUS CEREMONIES, DEATHS BIRTHS AND OF COURSE WAR OR BATTLE DEPENDING ON OPPONENTS, NOW AFTER ALL THIS REMEMBER THIS IS A MOVIE AND LITTLE THINGS LIKE THAT ARE OPEN FOR INTERPRETATION OR OF COURSE ERROR OR AN OVER ZEALOUS MAKE UP MAN OR WOMAN. YOU KNOW GREAT TO SEE THE MOVIE POSED SO MANY QUESTIONS, WATCH IT A FEW MORE TIMES AND IT ALL WILL BECOME CLEARER, I MEAN I LOVED THE FLICK BUT MUST SAY IT ALL SEEMED TO FLOW AND MAKE SENSE FROM THE GET GO WITH ME, HERES WHAT YOU DO SEE IT WITH A GOOD MALE FRIEND FIRST AND SEE WHAT HE THINKS, NOW MAKE SURE NO LONG DISCUSSIONS OR TOILET BREAKS THEN SOME TIME LATER WATCH IT ON YOUR OWN , REMEMBER IT IS A STORY OF SOLITUDE OF GROWTH AND I WONDER IF IT WERE ALL TRUE ONE OF GREAT REGRET

yeah... i know all that... i'm just dissapointed they killed his family. I mean, they could have done something less drastic like burned down their house or something.

and what do male friends and bathrooms breaks have to do with anything? Frankly, I'm offended at that.

reply

sorry man didnt mean to offend, ill explain, jeremiah johnson is a MANS movie so i stipulated watch it with a mate a buddy a male friend because his perspective would be closer to yours, as for the toilet break comment just another way of saying to watch it uninterupted and let it flow, once again sorry to offend as none meant, frankly i think i should be the one who should be offended , as i spent the time and effort to respond thoughtfully and you focused on the two most innocuous comments in my entire post, are you telling me that after reading my entire post the only thing to comment on was my colloquial attempt at comedy, hmmmm me thinks i should keep my thoughts to myself.

reply

First of all, I am a guy. Second, it's MAN'S. Third, this is my 16-year-old SISTER'S favorite movie, so I guess there goes your theory. I did get all that you said, and I really do appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts; however it offends me that you would think 1) that I'm a female, and 2) that this movie is somehow beyond girls' understanding.

reply

Unbelievable, you see my apology and once again focus on me missing an apostophe and that i think you are a female, I defy you or anyone else to find anywhere in my earlier texts where i considered you female. As for your 16 year old sister I applaud her in her taste of movies, but her unusually mature attitude aside it does nothing to change my theory in relation to the movie being a MAN'S movie, gee i hope i got that right. Stop being pretentous immature and appreciate when someone is trying to help you. One read of your first text indicates that you were without doubt clueless in relation to what this movie was about. Do yourself a favour next time just ask your sister about a movie that bothers you as she seems to be way more switched on, oh and by the way im retracting my earlier apology, you are obviously a jerk. Maybe if you paid more attention to the movies themselves than punctuation youd grasp them better. Now toddle off to bed and have a good day at school tomorrow.

The scalps that Del Gue puts on Jeremiahs saddle are Blackfeet Indian scalps. I think many people that saw the movie are confused by this. We know this for two reasons. 1) Jeremiah says to Del Gue when they come upon three sleeping indians camped "I have no problems (He says I have no truck with those Blackfeet) with those Blackfeet and I plan to spend alot of time up here and I don't want to start something with them now". 2) When they later come upon the the Flatheads, the lead Indian recognizes them ponies as being Blackfeet owned ponies probably because of the saddle and adornments. The Blackfeet were the mortal enemies of the Flathead so they would have been very appreciative of the scalps which is why the Chief gives him his daughter in Marriage. The Flatheads were aware of the crazy women and the killing of her family and the two white men avenging her (of course it had more to do with stolen furs), Del Gue also blames the killed Blackfeet as being the same ones that killed the Crazy womens family. As to your last question I believe it involves respect. Johnson proves himself to be a great warrior who is granted respect by the Crow chief. BTW, this was one of the first movies made at the time in 1972 involving Native Americans where they speak their own languages (Flathead speaking Montana Salish dialect) and the Crow speaking the Crow Language and not false broken english dialogue such as Tonto in the Lone Ranger.
