The mad woman Possible **SPOILERS**

I understand that Johnson's wife & the boy were killed as he went through the Crow burial ground.

What about the mad woman at the cabin? We learn that she has died when Johnson returns to her cabin & meet the man with his family in the corn shed. There's some kind of shrine to Johnson outside the cabin.

Do we think that the mad woman was also killed by the Crow due to Redford going through the burial ground due to his connection with her son?

It's possible, but I don't think so. Del Que tells Johnson that the Flathead consider the crazy woman to be "big medicine". I'm not sure what that would mean, but probably the Flathead leave her alone. I would think that the Crow would have similar feelings about her. In fact, I just now remembered that Johnson himself tells her that the Indians will not bother her again because she is "touched".

I always thought that she probably died of starvation or just sheer grief. She obviously was not in her right mind anymore and wasn't taking care of herself. She didn't eat or drink, just sat by her childrens graves until she died.

For some reason I always figured she just got some disease from not taking care of herself. Nothing really to base that on. It was just the first thing that crossed my mind.

The crazy woman was a real person. The Crazy Mountains of central Montana were named by the Crow Indians themselves in "honor" of her. I'm not sure of what her fate was. Her family was slaughtered by native americans and she went nuts. Apparently their superstition about crazy people led them to leave her alone.
