...while there's a piecing siren-like sound. Interesting. A cookie and muchos kudos to anybody who can place that particular haunting scene in a somewhat more famous later movie.

Not sure about the later movie to which you refer, but they used sound effects from both "War Of The Worlds" (1953) and "Forbidden Planet".
