Hotel guests

I've watched this movie several times and am watching it as I type this. The scene where the hotel guests are all evicted made me ask this question, why are there so many people in this hotel? Is Lago supposed to be some kind of resort town or something that would attract a number of visitors. There are just a few buildings there, so why all the people in the hotel?

The town is obviously new and the buildings are new so these could be new settlers that were planning on building there own places and are there temporarily.

Just spitballing!!

Just passing by I guess. If that innkeeper's wife is willing to leave and drive the buggy by herself at the end, another town or settlement shouldn't be that far.

Maybe there aren't enough houses in the town.

It's cheaper for those people to just rent a room in the hotel instead of building their own houses.

The hotel really functions like a "boarding house," not simply a hotel per se.
