I barely remember this movie. I was 11. Doesn't it end with them all being dead all along? I think I remember it mostly because Donna Mills looked really good to an 11 year old. She left an enduring impression.

there's a new book on amazon.com called TELEVISION FRIGHT FILMS OF THE 1970S that talks about this film.

reply

You're right they were all really dead. It took them a while to realize it.

It's a remake of an old movie but has a different title, I believe.

The plot twist is similar to a film called "No Exit" (1962), which you can read more about on imdb.

I would have been about 13 when this aired and I haven't seen it since.

I just remember the Boeing 747 they flew to the island resort on having blacked out windows so nobody could see where they were going. And then, when it dropped them off, it turned around and headed out again and someone said, "There goes our bus".

Then there was some young couple who got into a car accident when speeding out the airport to catch the flight. And don't we see Lloyd Bridge's character's horrific-looking wife at the end of the movie ... and him screaming in terror at the sight of her?!

I used to love those early 70's made-for-TV "horror" movies that were most definitely more eerie than frightening. They could give you goose-bumps like nothing else. Damn, I wish someone would put out a collection!

reply

Yes, Lloyd Bridges figured he might be dead, but at least he's here with his girlfriend, far away from his wife. They she shows up as an apparent suicide.

I was about 13 when this shown. I thought it was pretty cool.

Okay, so that was the twist I couldn't remember. I just remembered Lloyd Bridges' character freaking out at the sight of her. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

I haven't seen this movie since 1972 (I'm actually surprised I remembered this much). But I guess that's what was so great about these early 70's chillers - they were so good they left lasting impressions.

Would love to get my hands on a copy of this one someday.

Take care.

Great! Thanks for the tip.

This is one of my favorite TV films. I hope to go to the resort sometime this year or next, if it is still there. I would love to see it and be a part of it because of how great this show was.

I think I prefer the Reverend Fellowes' conclusion that they've all "lost their dreams"

Would love to know what is being intoned as Dave & Ellen flee at the end.

The sudden shout of "go to Hell!" still freaks me out.

Catch "Outward Bound" from 1932, if you can. The original version of this story.

Just watched this again last night. I was eight when I saw it the first time. What I never got was if they were dead and in hell ,what did they do that was that bad. We'd all be going to hell then…Maybe purgatory???>

reply

Yes, they are in purgatory, not hell. They are there because they represent the seven deadly sins--Lloyd Bridges is lust, Cloris Leachman is vanity, Ed Asner is greed, etc.

reply

Interesting concept!
Who would represent sloth?
Reverend Fellowes?

reply

Yes, probably. He could also represent "hubris" with his self-important ramblings about faith.
