Paramount wants to do a fourth movie.

With or without Francis Ford Coppola. Honestly, that could be kind of cool.

As long as it's without Pacino, I may watch it.

The 3rd movie was set in the 70s (even though it looks like the late 80s when it was made). It's about 35 years since the 3rd came out, so that would put the story some where in the 00s.
I think I read somewhere that Michael dies in the 90s.
Andy Garcia's could easily reprise his role.

What did you think about the third movie?

reply

The less said, the better.

And Coppola released a new version of it a few years ago.
Not really sure what the point of it was.

Some kind of re-edit. I only III once and have no plans to see it again - including the edit.

money money money

I really doubt they gave the ol series a re-watch and said to themselves, gee I just love these characters soooo much, we should do another one after 30 years!

fuck the risk of botching it and destroying it and just leavings things as, I just love the characters soooo much

reply

Aren't there more books that Puzo wrote?

reply

Not too sure TBH, looks like there could be 3? Or 3 different ones (only one is the godfather), but they use the same characters for other two.

reply

The Sicilian (1984) was a great novel, but the film was totally botched by Michael Cimino in 1987. Would make an awesome series in the right hands. But might have copyright issues.

Who's left? I don't think Garcia is a big enough draw.

If it were a prequel with Vito, I'd be interested!

reply

Garcia still can't shake his Cubano accent either. Seriously, as engaging an actor he was if you watch every one of his high profile movies he slips into Cubano accent when he gets emotional.

Although I enjoyed all of II, my favorite part was the beginning of young Vito's mafia life. Too bad Paramount didn't follow up II with III being a full prequel reusing DeNiro (back when he was still tolerable to watch), or better yet, make II all prequel and III the story of the Corleone's in Nevada.

reply

But everybody is dead. They would have to reboot it pretty much.

reply

What would the story be about though?

There's no viable New York Mafia in today's criminal world. It's all about foreign drug kingpins and their corrupt governments.

reply

That could actually be an interesting angle. The landscape has changed since the last film;when was that set, the late 1970s? Perhaps it could be about a new Godfather assuming authority amidst eroding influence in a fractured criminal underworld and there is a turf war brewing with Mexican cartels or Russian mobsters.

reply

They could reflect the eventual decline of the NY Mafia but there wouldn't be much drama or character arc to develop. We'd just watch Vincent slowly lose what was once like Roman Empire. See my point? The movie would just end up retreading what was and is already known.

For my money it would be cool to see the backstory of and rise of Don Tomasino back in Sicily, or perhaps his older adversary Don Ciccio who murdered Vito's family.

A bold move, usually studios don't try to top masterpieces.

But GF III was kinda a dud.

So the studio probably thinks that even if it's not as good as GF I and II, as long as the audience thinks it's better than III, they won't get reamed for taking the chance.

reply

Yes, we still need the complete story of the rise of Vito Corleone

reply

Maybe a flashback movie with Vito, Sal, Pete, and Hyman Roth down in Cuba.

reply

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO please don't
