I'd like to see a movie about Michael's experiences in the war.

It could be very interesting.

They only mentioned that in passing. We know zero about it, where he fought, etc. You know what was weird: that when he suggested he hit the Turk and Capt. McCluskey Santino said, "this isn't the war where you shoot someone from a mile away, you go up to him and bing, blow his brains out". However I don't see the huge difference in the two scenarios. Mike had already obviously killed people in war, was it such a big stretch to do it in the Bronx?
But anyway the problem with your suggestion is if they did that it would have nothing at all to do with the original movies, his family, etc. It was something separate.
It would be interesting if he had fought in Italy, which brings up another point: if he was hiding out in Sicily where there were still US troops around and he was recently discharged, what if a soldier recognized him. "Hey Mike what the hell are you doing back here?" That would be a good idea, however then that part of the Godfather would have to be remade.

He was a Marine. Pacific only. Stick in he first movie and check his uniform.
Wounded, awarded the Navy Cross. The BS about him killing only a mile away show's Sonny has no first hand knowledge of Mike's war experiences.

Did US Marines only serve in the Pacific theatre during WW2?

Yes

Why is that?

The Marines are an arm of the Navy. Seeing the Pacific was going to be an island hopping war. They were better suited for that fighting. That's not to say the army wasn't evolved they were.

At the start of the war the Marines didn't have one full strength standing division. The 1st Marine division that started the retaking of the Pacific at Guadalcanal was just a brigade size unit 1/3 the size of a normal division on Dec 7, 1941. By the end of the war the Marines had been built up to 6 full strength divisions.

The 1st Marine was nearly destroyed three times during the fighting with the Japanese. At Guadalcanal, Peleliu and Okinawa. It had to completely rebuild after each action due to losses.

The Army on the other hand had many divisions that were better suited and trained for the upcoming European ground campaign.

You should watch https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pacific_(miniseries) for a look at the major battles the 1st Marine were involved in. While not perfect, it covers the horrors these men had to live and fight thru.

That why I comment on Sonny not having a clue what Mike saw and did during the war. They didn't hand out the Navy Cross, just under The Medal Of Honor for beating people with a garage can lid.
