The Origin of Running Zombies

I just watched this movie realized that this is probably the first zombie film in history that features running zombies. It's pretty great how they bust into the frame for a couple of seconds to pick somebody off, only to disappear into the darkness seconds later. All in all, this has to be the nuttiest zombie movie I've ever seen.

The 50s Vincent Price film "Last Man on Earth" has some fast zombies... I don't recall if any ran, but they weren't slow.

No. The zombies in that film weren't very fast, and they aren't zombies. They're vampires. At any rate, none of them actually run. They might stumble around in a somewhat quick fashion, but they most certainly do not run.
