Hi there.

I am 13. I LOVE satires, especially ones that expose life for what it really is, that it isn't all butterflies and Disney. Satires such as "South Park", Paul Verhoeven films, and the "Johnny The Homicidal Maniac" comic book series by Jhonen Vasquez, and "Howard The Duck" comics (The 70's ones, AND the 2002 continuation mini-series). Also, I watch tons of R-Rated and Unrated films. I watch lots of slasher films, I watch violent anime, I watch South Park, I watch Family Guy, I watch UNCUT Hellraiser films, I own a few UNCUT TROMA films, I love Paul Verhoeven films, I love Friday The 13th films, I watch Texas Chainsaw Massacre films (Although TCM 1 wouldn't seem too inappropriate), I watch Farrely Brothers comedies, I LOVE Cheech & Chong films, I have started taking an interest in Howard Stern, I play "Mortal Kombat", "Doom" and "Resident Evil" video games, and more things like that. My Mom even likes Hellraiser and Robocop movies! I haven't been told that I'm not allowed to watch anything in a long time.

I ordered "Fritz The Cat" last week, and it just arrived yesterday. My mother saw me unpacking it, saw the cover, and said that I can't watch it. Now, I would like to know, judging from other things I like, would anything in "Fritz" be too extreme and 'inappropriate' for me? I would like to show Mom an opinion from someone who has seen this before. Please reply fast...

No. Absolutely not. Just tell your Mom, “At least I didn’t purchase 1977’s Heavy Metal!”

Seriously, Fritz the Cat is educational for young people your age. It teaches you that animation can appeal to viewers of all ages, in the process giving you a historical perspective on the challenges facing animators inking independent films in the ‘70s outside of the Disney system. More importantly, watching Fritz is a visual primer on storytelling and the structure of meaningful narrative and can stimulate important discussion on censorship and why it’s so prevalent in our country. Talk about the artist’s vision and what message he intended to communicate in making this film.

This animated film is an historical document, and to prevent you from watching it is to deprive you of a valuable lesson on this milestone in animation history. My mother always encouraged me to watch as many films as I can, regardless of content, and this is why I have a formidable understanding of animation history as well as motion picture history. Most of the content in the film can be found in most, if not all, of today’s PG-13 films. So, it would be utterly absurd to bar you from watching it.

Many kids younger than you are have seen Natural Born Killers, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Amityville Horror. These movies, (excepting Natural Born Killers) in my honest opinion have no semblance of coherent, consistent narrative structure as well as good performances. Fritz the Cat contains excellent vocal performances, narrative that continues to be an example of groundbreaking storytelling and will eventually be selected for preservation by the National Registry.

Your mother, simply, must reconsider her decision to prevent you from watching a masterpiece.

After some negotiating with her, (She wanted to make me do something that she could have easily done, but neither of us wanted to do) and she said that I could keep/watch Fritz if I did it. I watched Fritz, and it is indeed a very good milestone in film history. Ralph Bakshi is officially one of my favorite directors now.

Your mom doesn't know what she is taking about then. Of course, watch whatever the *beep* you want.

It wasn't a little chore... I won't go into the details, but it was something that I could have gotten kicked in the balls by our angry neighbors for doing.

Gee, when I found Fritz the Cat in the discount bin at the local video store that was going out of business, I was so stoked! I hadn't seen the movie since it came out, when I was a mere tyke, and yes, my parents took me to see it! I brought it home and planned to watch it while I was wrapping xmas presents, and I was like, "Hey girls! Look! It's a movie called, 'Fritz the Cat'! He's X-RATED and ANIMATED!" They gave me the most distainful looks...anyhoo, since I let my kids basically watch what they wanted growing up (which may explain a lot!), I really thought they'd get a kick out of the flick...they watched most of it and thought it was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo lame! WHELL! Sounds like you have a pretty good head on your shoulders, and glad you liked the flick...it's a real time capsule and actually pretty fun to watch! My philosophy about what my kids should and could watch was always, "if they want to watch something, let 'em...if you hide it from them, it just makes it all the more enticing...even more so than it may actually be..." But that was just me...

well, you seem mature enough to watch it, but I thought it was more twisted than it's sequel, The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat. I would say it's definitely extreme and inappropriate - This has to be one of the most outrageous and out there films I've seen.

Of course your mom would say that. It's okay for you to watch mindless, mean-spirited, wanton violence and destruction. But sex between anthropomorphized cartoon animals in an intelligent social commentary? Inappropriate!

Why do so many parents think like this?

reply

I have no idea, but it really gets on my nerves when I see people on boards, going "My 12-Year-Old wants to see this movie, how much sex is in it? Gore doesn't matter, it's fine for him to see bloody stuff, but sex is NO GOOD! Please, tell me even if there's just a small reference or innuendo, because we want him to grow up awkward and uneducated about the facts of life!"

It annoys me SO much.

Even if it was shown, the OP is probably old enough to watch x-rated films now - unless they were under the age of 7 when they started the thread.

- What are you gonna do, when the world catches on?
