Why is this move dubbed in English?
This movie looks very much like the voicing has been done in a studio and dubbed over. The acoustics and timing are all wrong.
Why on Earth would they do that? Really off putting.
I understand that some lines were redubbed to switch in American-English phrases for British ones, such as "truck" for "lorry," and something about Rusk's flat being on the American "second floor" rather than the British "first floor."
Perhaps in having to dub those lines, the entire soundtrack had to be lifted and re-dubbed.
Hitchcock PURPOSELY post-dubs Rusk's famous heard-but-not-seen line "Got a place to stay?" when he appears behind Babs.
Hitch may have needed to re-dub all dialogue set in the noisy Covent Garden marketplace.
Still, most of it sounds fine to me. Maybe you have a bad print or disc.
Do you not realize that almost 100% of lines in all movies from at least the early 60's, are dubbed? It's called "looping," and is the only way to get clean, fat sound. These days it's done digitally so the match is perfect, but watch any film done before, say the year 2000 and you can spot it easily.
It's kind of mind-blowing the first time you actually notice it, esp on a film you've seen before.
However, the OP may be referring to those specific lines that were changed, as mentioned above.
