Why wasn't the movie properly concluded - SPOILER

I liked this movie a lot. It was a bit slow but nevertheless very good. However, one thing irked me.

The ending. Throughout the movie we see Judy Geeson talking to what looks like a shrink - she's telling a story. We see the back of his balding head. I'd have thought at the end of the movie, we'd have a conclusion to this set-up. Like the shrink would get up and lead Judy back to her cell in the mental institution. Anyone else think this?
