reminds me a little of barfly

in it's look someitmes. anyone else agree with me? it's different in a lot of ways too of course. the characters and story are completely different. but the look and feel are similiar in some way. i loved barfly until i saw fat city which topples it though. way better.

I agree. "Barfly" is one of my favorite movies. The bar scenes in "Fat City" were reminiscent of "Barfly," especially the relationship of the two characters to each other and to booze. This movie really blew me away. I can't believe I hadn't even heard of it before a friend recommended it recently. I'm really glad I saw it.

me too.

I think the parallel drawn relies on Bukowski. The seedy bar scenes, the drunk gilrlfriends and the refusal to live a prescribed life. You live honest and fight for it/

How could Barfly possibly be one of your favorite movies? It is one of the most depressing films I have ever seen.

reply

That's what makes it good.

nobody lives forever...

I agree. I even noticed that the two movies share a character name- Tully.

Good point. Both Huston and Barbet Schroeder have been around the world.

i like old films where people just stay in crappy apartments/bars and get drunk as cheaply as possible all day! is that all people did in 70's america!?

The Charles Bukowski fans out there should check out anything by David Goodis. Especially if you like your bars seedy and your drunks damaged! Cassidy's Girl is a good place to start from and I wouldn't be surprised if that's where Bukowski borrowed a few ideas!

is that a book :(
