How does Loach do it?

I'm amazed at how Loach keeps finding people to perform in his films who have never acted before, give fantastic performances and some of them never act again!!

Michael Riddall (the psychiatrist) and Grace Cave (the mother) only ever acted in this film. They had key roles and were terrific. Michael Riddall was a real psychiatrist and Cave apparently was someone who really agreed with everything her character did. They doesn't say much for her as a person! I read that Loach came across her at some Women's Conservative club and her views were pretty old fashioned.

This is my favourite of Loach's films but unfortunately its scarcely known.

Loach has always made films with a social message and has never sold out in even the slightest way. I don't always agree with his message but I wish there were more film makers like him.

Sandy Ratcliff was excellent in this one. You could really identify with her character's plight. Her Sue Osman in EastEnders had shades of Janice Baildon in her, in that she came from an unhappy background.
