Was there backlash against this movie?

I just posted how I thought it was pretty brave of the big name actors to appear in the movie, because of the boundary-pushing content - especially for 1972.

But does anyone actually know if the religious right really raised a stink about the movie? Protests, boycotts? What did movie critics have to say? What about politicians? I'm curious as to how the movie was received back in the day.
