I like this one more because it gives the unique perspective of a tour. It needs to be out on DVD!

I agree, and there is alot of great footage out there to be put onto dvd.I have both on and I for some reason like Elvis on tour more.Maybe because you see him in more outfits, and because of the footage with him in the car.Very good film making.Maybe for his 30th anniversary they will do something special for the fans and come out with some new dvd releases.

In my opinion you can`t compare those two movies. Theres almost 2 years between, the songs are mostly not the same, EOT is what the title says and TTWII is about his vegas engagement. They are both great in their own right and I wouldn`t like to compare.

I completely agree! :)

Right on target Anozira !
Two years of touring is behind Elvis at this point in 1972. He needed to reevaluate his whole life right then. Cleanse himself of all the hangers on and rid himself of the uninspiring management and most of all , get off the prescription drugs which are at the root of his decline. If only....

All of that said , Elvis still gave us a lot to be thankful for and I love the man. This film and anything else with him in it is a treasure.

Once again, right on target, Imakov also! It's a gem of a film, showing a 70s tour rather than a residency. Only 2 years on from TTWII, but different songs and performances. There must be a great audio track to go with this too.

Posted in the ELVIS on tour DVD thread in early 2007 speaking out with anyone else who wants a DVD of the April '72 tour, and have come back here on hearing there's a 'Special Edition' DVD release out. From Youtube though(?!) Can't find it on the UK Play.com or anything new on a search engine so far (might be doing something wrong there), so still searching... if anyone finds it exists, please post details here! Thanks

I watched both films on TCM this weekend. I like both for different reasons. Elvis On Tour has that great version of Polk Salad Sally, with Jerry Scheff playing a really jaw dropping bass solo. I also think the song selection is a little better than That's The Way It Is, with songs like Burning Love, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Funny How Times Slips Away, Always On My Mind and An American Trilogy.

And I also like that he gave JD Sumner and The Stamps Singers a chance to do a song on their own. That really shows you how much respect Elvis had for the musicians that he had playing with them. I wonder how much grief Parker gave him over putting that song in the film.

And the panties bit during Suspicious Minds made me laugh.

On the other hand, the rehearsal bits in That's The Way It Is are really interesting. I really like the version of Little Sister/Get Back, especially since I had always heard that Elvis hated The Beatles. And I also liked some of the ballads that were used, at least in the 2001 version, anyway, like In The Ghetto, You've Lost That Loving Feeling, and You Don't Have To Say You Love Me.

And I like the way the 2001 version of That's The Way It Is is edited better. There's more closeups of the band members, and being guitar geek, actually being able to see what James Burton is playing on his Paisley Pink Telecaster when he's soloing is really nice.

Elvis met the Beatles and maintained a casual friendship with Harrison. Elvis explicitly mentioned liking the Beatles in the '68 tv special. And he recorded 'Something', 'Yesterday', 'Hey Jude' (sort of) and 'Get Back' (sort of), and recorded 'Never Been To Spain' which had the line 'never went to England but I kinda like the Beatles'. Elvis really liked the Beatles and quite obviously, but somehow rumors to the contrary became so rife that in the 1995 "Beatles Anthology" project Ringo Starr himself seemed to believe them. I read somewhere that George wasn't even aware of Ringo's statement in the special until after it aired, and then set him straight on that. :-)

I don't know why I didn't think of this when I added the above comment, but Ringo has now publicly acknowledged Elvis again (another time was in his '78 TV special where he shows a standup of Elvis and a snippet of 'Hound Dog' plays).
On his new album "Y Not" there is a duet between Ringo and McCartney on the track 'Walk With You' where Ringo sings '...but we remember a song that starts out Love Me Tender and that King of hearts'. Great song from a great album, it can be heard here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sIxdrr0mSY
