I thought it was better...

I'm not sure about other people but I thought that the first one was good but sort of dreary but this one was more entertaining and a more fun experience. To me it just seemed like a better film, I also enjoyed the plot more. What do you think?

reply

I know of but haven't seen the original, but I did enjoy this one a lot.

Well I've now seen them both. I prefer this one a little only as it was the first I saw, and it has Phibes singing over the rainbow, a wonderfullu surreal moment.

I love the scene where Dr. Phibes, snickering, hides among the skulls in the cave. Hilarious. I like "The Abominable Dr. Phibes" more, not least because of its set design, but this one surely is funnier on a pure comedy level.

Sylistically and plot-wise, the first film was better, but as far as fun and entertainment, the second film was far superior -not the least of which being the use of music and the expanded role of Vulnavia.

What damages the second film, however, are the obvious moments of post-production tampering. It is clearly evident that the finale has been re-dubbed and the whole elixer/river of Life plot thread has been somehow altered.

Anybody know what really happened and why?

Basically a lot of suits on set kept tampering with things, plus serious budget cuts as well. Because of them we never got part 3, which is a shame as I read a treatment for it that was great. I still liked this film but would have liked to have seen its original form. Though say what you will about this one, it was better than the script for Phibes Resurrectus (Phibes vs a cult of satanists which ends with Victoria being brought back then dying again then Phibes and Vulnavia committing suicide.)

I love them both. But also Vincent Price as Edward Lionheart in Theatre of Blood. A similar kind of movie, but Diana Rigg plays the 'Vulnavia' role.

I agree with you - I have always preferred Phibes Rises Again - funnier, more stylish, great music, and a little less 10 Green Bottles plotwise. Enjoy both tho.

I actually enjoyed the first film a lot more. Even Vulnavia's outfits were better in it.
