Movie Score

This is quite a good film and worth watching. Some of the score reminds me of Symphonic Dances by Rachmaninov. The similarity is in the darkness of the scoring, the bittersweetness. It's an excellent score and the principal tune is very effective and original although it nods in the direction of Symphonic Dances, and why not? What a great piece that is and very like film score music although it wasn't composed with that in mind. I'd bet that the composer of this film music has studied Symphonic Dances or at least heard it. It's an excellent model to use either intentionally or unintentionally.

The score for DR JEKYLL AND SISTER HYDE by David Whitaker (who also did a superb job scoring VAMPIRE CIRCUS) was one of a number that were supposedly scheduled for release by the company that put out numerous other Hammer film soundtracks (grab 'em while you can). But, for reasons unknown (to me, anyway, and I did some snooping around online to no avail) the company vanished and no other soundtracks were issued. This is really awful, since there are a few Hammer film scores that would still be nice to have (HANDS OF THE RIPPER comes to mind, for example). I suppose we are lucky we got Harry Robinson's soundtracks to THE VAMPIRE LOVERS and TWINS OF EVIL. It's a shame DR JEKYLL AND SISTER HYDE won't see the light of day. The music is quite successful throughout, with wonderfully overblown passages during the character transformations.

There is a good 7.34 duration suite from the film (originally released on a Dracula LP narrated by Christopher Lee) reissued on the Silva Screen CD "50 Years of Classic Horror Film Music" (FILMCD017).
It also features three other short Hammer suites from that same vinyl release for the films She, The Vampire Lovers and Fear in the Night (which is excellent).
The Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde theme also appears on the GDI release The Hammer Film Music Collection Volume 1 (GDICD002).
Both CDs can still be picked up, though they are getting scarce!
