Did this movie

hurt Ned Beaty's career? Right off the top of my head I couldn't name a single movie with him besides Deliverance, and I've always thought of him as "that guy".

reply

He's definitely one of those "Hey, it's that guy!" character actors.

I quickly googled his filmography, because I remember always seeing him around, and after "Deliverance" he was in some huge hits like "Superman", "Superman II", and "Silver STreak" in the years following "Deliverance". He also has a voice credit for a "Toy Story" movie, so he's still around even though he's no longer young.

I wonder if he will return to the Roseanne reboot series as Dan's dad, Ed?

reply

Oh yeah, forgot about that! He really has been in some good stuff, hasn't he?

If I was an actor, I'd want a career like his, instead of the career of a major star. The character actors do interesting work for decades and decades, and with any luck are still working at Mr. Beatty's age, while the star actors are telling their plastic surgeon that if they can just look a little younger they're sure of a comeback! And the Beatty's don't have to publicize films as if their careers depended on it, or take the blame if a project fails, or be constantly bothered if they go out for a latte, or starve themselves. No, the Ned Beatty types just act, and do it so very very well!

Good point. And I can think of no better example of this than character actor Dub Taylor (Aka Newly from Gunsmoke’s father). Short, portly, and unassuming, and you may not know him by name. But I’ll bet that practically everyone short of the millennial generation will recognize him, particularly fans of the western genre. Worked steadily from the late 1930’s all the way up until the year of his death in 1994. That’s a rather impressive Résumé.

Not at all.

Everyone in this landmark hit went on to a lifetime of acting work, and not just the four leads.

That includes the man playing the rapist, Bill McKinney, who continued working until his recent death.
Ned Beatty was in many successful and highly-regarded movies and TV series. He is probably best known for the God-like studio executive in Network thundering, “You have meddled with the primal forces of NATURE! And YOU ... WILL ... ATONE!”

reply

Yeah he was amazing in that role. Also Network is an incredible film and more relevant than ever. I would encourage everyone to see it. They should show Network in school.

On Dinner For Five, Burt Reynolds talks about how the scene did affect Beatys psyche a little bit. Burt tells a story about how he persuaded Ned to try and get over the experience by taking a trip down the river again, with a guide and all. Of course the guide, when they approach the location of the rape scene, points out to the whole tour, “that’s where Ned Beatty was raped in the movie Deliverance!” Lol.
