Ned Beatty's teeth--wtf!

Is anyone else totally distracted by Beatty's teeth in this movie?! His teeth looked at least as bad as the mountain people's! I do t expect people to have a perfect grill but wow--his teeth were discolored to the extreme and crowded and filthy. Very weird. And gross. I have never noticed his teeth in any other films.

This being his very first movie, he may not have a good dental plan yet.

There *is* dental make-up which can be applied to teeth, to make them look like Bobby's. I'm sure you've seen it with other actors and just didn't notice it. I've seen it; I just can't think of any of the actors' or movie names at the moment. Keep an eye out for it in the future. I'm sure you'll see someone who you know has nice looking teeth, but he looks terrible in some particular movie.

reply

I'm aware of that but what possible reason would there be to make his teeth look like this? It was just really distracting and gross. I imagine those were his real teeth--again, because there would be no reason at all to give the character such nasty choppers!

Jesus--what the hell is wrong with you? Who gives a damn what his teeth look like? Is the movie that boring to you that you would rather spend time staring at someone's mouth?

reply

There were several close ups of Ned Beatty smiling or talking, and he had badly stained brown teeth. The OP isn't fixating on it to the point of not following the movie. It's distracting and also made me think what the significance is.

Also, toward the beginning of the movie, he mentions that he's a salesman (cars maybe? I forget), so the bad teeth are extra odd for his character. I don't think that I noticed them until later in the movie when they're on the rocks. But then I couldn't look away.

I liked Bobby's brown teeth.

After they capsize and Lewis is injured and Drew gone Bobby and Ed are hanging onto the rocks trying to figure out what to do. You see Ned's teeth really well but you also see Ned sucking on a white lifesaver or mint. Seemed odd but it was a movie.

Ned's teeth are like that in other films. Especially the early ones. Back in the day people in showbiz didn't automatically get their teeth capped (this was before veneers, implants, and the newer cosmetic dentistry we have today). Cosmetic dentistry is expensive. Even today --- look at your favorite actor's earlier movies --- most of them don't have perfect teeth. That usually comes later when they are making more movies and becoming successful. Some actors, like Steve Buscemi keep their bad teeth --- although he seems to have had some dental work done recently.

I thought the same thing when I saw Ned's teeth, he is at home with the hillbillies!

God bless the 1970s, actors were real-looking and therefore wholly believable and relatable. Today's actors are dull-as-dirt, freakish mannequins.

reply

Quite right, snicker!

And the problem is that kids these days want to emulate them. And if they don't, they're the odd one out, and therefore subject to mockery. I see teenagers with blindingly white teeth, drawing the eye just as surely as missing or black teeth. Boys with plucked eyebrows, making them look like powder puffs. Moisturized skin, on both males and females, making them look like waxwork freaks.

Where will this game of one-upmanship all end?

Lol, yes, they were almost as bad as the inbreds!
