Comments on 'Delirium,' good or bad?!

I can think of few films that have stirred a heated debate more than this one! I've just watched the Anchor Bay DVD with both the "International" and "American" versions on it. I was intrigued by how different they were! I'm currently trying to get the "French" version of Delirium which is different from the other two. I can think of no film that illustrates the choices that filmmakers have to make when releasing their films on the international market. It's interesting to see how far the various "versions" of a film stray from the filmmaker's original concept.

As to how I rate the film itself, I would rate it 3.5 out of 5. Some scenes show brilliance. Others seem a bit sloppy, probably from the constraints of a small budget. Given the sleazy subject matter, it falls under my list of "guilty pleasures."

I'm curious to see what other people thought of the film. There were some radical differences of opinions on IMDB's comment section for this film. Some of that might have been due to differences in the version seen. Others, of course, to differences in taste.

Wow, I thought Arnold Schwarzenegger was a bad actor...

But Mickey Hartigay gets a Bizarro Oscar! Holy cow! He was awful!

I got 30 minutes in before I had to stop because I was laughing so hard. If you like movies where stabbing looks like they smearing ketchup on the skin, then this movie is perfect! Every time I saw his cocked eyed face, I would break up laughing. I don't mind the 70's acting, but holy cow, this movie was a joke. Buio Omega is way better.

Really? Considering the role he played, i thought he did well [ And his weird face added more to the strangeness of it all ]. Over-the-top, yes, but bad? I wouldn't say that. Arnold is the dull one in this comparison.

B.O. has its moments, but for me Delirio Caldo was much more interesting and perverse [ Despite being random and wacky, of course ]. Nothing in B.O. tops the bedroom love/mutilation scene between Hartigay and Calderoni; it's alluring and repulsive at the same time [ Rita Calderoni's physical beauty takes center stage here ], and the emotional piano soundtrack clanging away behind it all reinforces the orgasmic atmosphere of simultaneous sex & violence. I love it!!! =D

As an interesting aside, Arnold Schwarzenegger played Mickey Hartigay (Mansfield's husband and former Mr. Universe) in 'The Jayne Mansfield Story.'

I think the movie is bad in just about every way ever, and it wasn't even worth the effort of downloading it...

whats wrong with it, according to me? :

Script and plot sucked, Nothing really happens other then a guy sexually assaults then kills random girls, with moments of just standing and idling, as well as the plot/focus of the film isn't really understandable, but the filmmakers did no justice to that aspect. The camera work is decent at best, leaning towards terrible, shots during intense scenes and what not are usually just monotone stares of the actors trying to look defensive but just coming out as stiff and crude. The production of the movie sucks, whenever a outside shot is concerned everything has this grayish hue to it making it blury looking and just dull and lifeless, it most likely contributed to a bad lighting crew, which remains throughout the movie. The sets are nothing special, Theres a house with a cellar and bedrooms, one or two apartments rooms, and some outside shots, really low budget obviously, don't expect to be visually entertained by this movie. The Editor, is horrid, in one perticular spot it shows the protagonist like shaking chains over people and it will cut between naked girls and girls with clothes on (even if its a plot point 'insanity', its retarded.), as well as no scenes come across as fluent to me, it just seems like the camera man just filmed it GO and CUT for production, then the editor tried to make it cohesive, but was too stoned to care to read the script. The acting, is laughable. The main actor is a body builder i read in a review, and it shows, he doesn't know how to act at all. He'll just walk around, make faces, and shake around in chains, thats about all the body of work he shows in the film. The supporting cast is also a bunch of acting school rejects, theyre be moments where characters stare at the camera completely out of context with the scene. Theres a part where 2 women struggle, one looks like shes trying her best to break the others hold, and the holder is just standing there doing nothing no stregnth, just idling holding some girls hands. Best way to put it, its unconvincing and probably the first flaw you notice. The direction was average gallio direction, but with all the other flaws in the movie, i think he didn't manage his crew/cast well at all.... The only good thing about this movie is the boobies obviously, but with all else concerned you'll probably just be bored when the moments come around...

A failed attempt at a movie. 1/5. i dont give zero ratings, but if i did, i would. The only notable thing is that this movie was made in 1972 and has as much sexual content as a softcore porn, just with a serial killer involved.

"The direction was average gallio direction"

I've seen over forty gialli and must say that DELIRIUM, while certainly having a giallo-influenced narrative structure, is a one-of-a-kind experience. There's simply nothing "average" there. In fact, I'd argue that just about all the aspects you cite as flaws are in fact its USP.

What?? I'd like to see Schwarzenegger do something which rivals Mickey Hargitay's out-to-lunch performance in DELIRIUM, especially in those wonderful scenes with Rita Calderoni.
