Really good FX for 1972?

The clothes and locations clearly date the movie (which isn't a bad thing, btw) I'm just amazed at how impressive the special effects are for the time?
Looking at other movies around the time (Hammer, Amicus, AIP, etc) the effects look primitive...but the make-up, props and applications look so detailed, explicit and realistic in DEATH LINE?
