Opening sequence

Does anyone have any theories as to the significance of the combat scene in the beginning?I know that Darren Wilson(the first soldier killed)was from Andy's home town, but the 2nd soldier has(as far as I can tell)no literal connection at all to the story.I got the idea that some kind of diseased force re-animated Andy through some kind of death-chain,but that is so remotely inferred,I wouldn't bank on it.Anyway, classic B-film that is so much more than a "B' film.Great dark gem, together with "Black Christmas"--they both have their claustrophobic fuzzy brown insulated worlds that just cling to ya.R.I.P. Bob Clark...

Do I remember wrong or was the second soldier Andy? Little else would make sense but I can't picture his face at the moment. Either way the dread feeling of death during the opening was quite haunting for me. Especially when mothers voice creeps in. Fantastic film making
