Awesome...But Crappy Ending!!

I saw this for the first time the other night on TCM. I grew up with Tom Selleck on "Magnum, p.i." and have always been a fan--subsequently watching many other movies since his "Magnum" days, and now enjoying his current TV show "Blue Bloods." When I saw he was the star of this 70's B horror flick, I thought awesome! I like older horror or scary movies, and I thought this one would be perfect to add to my collection.

I will admit, that despite the standard 70's "cheese" and gaudy decorations of sets, this movie was pretty freaky and included lots of effective suspense and on-the-edge-of-your-seat moments. The eerie taunting of the wife's name being called out in the middle of the night was pretty bone-chilling. I also liked the setting and where the movie was filmed...kind of different and a refreshing change from where most low-budget scare-flicks of the time would have been filmed or set.

But, with all the scares and plot twists, the ending (in my opinion) was stupid and pathetic!! I won't state what exactly happens, as I don't want to truly include a "spoiler", but I was totally disappointed and annoyed! No matter how good or enjoyable a movie is...if the end is dumb then it ruins the rest of it as well. I would not bother with this movie, unless you're a die-hard Tom Selleck fan--and even then, stick with "Magnum, p.i."!!

True , I didn't think she'd still kill him in the end .

Me either! It was a total let-down, and left you going "What the heck? That sucked!" SPOILER: Even if they had it to where she tried killing him, but he still saw and stopped her, it would have been much better. Killing off the main character/hero is a terrible way to end a movie!

As I watched it, I kept thinking I want to find this on DVD and buy it...but after the ending, I'm not even keeping the TCM airing I taped! :-(

This was my first time as well, Now I was thinking it might be a TV movie, make no mistake back when some TV films would shoot nude scenes and extra violence for Europe and Asia release. i.e. "Nightmare in Badham County" and "Contract on Cherry Street"
However after seeing it was from UA I knew otherwise.

Anyway what a letdown and a big plot hole as they had only till midnight and then she gets another turn oh c'mon
One other item: where was they other witch in the painting?

Well something that I could not figure out is the other two women seemed TOTALLY taken over by the witch's spirits. But the wife was struggling between possessed and not possessed. She seemed to ALWAYS know who she was. But she was still controlled.

Wait a min think back the blond went to the Dr asking for help at one point early in the film.

Yeah, this was an actual movie release I think. Before now, if it has ever been shown on TV (except for HBO or some network like that) they would have had to edit the language and nude scenes. But, within the last few years, practically everything is left in.

I also thought how the other witches left together to go to Hong Kong, when they had no idea who each other was (once they supposedly came out of the spell) was ridiculous too.

Killing off the leads was a major trend in the late Sixties and into the Seventies. Many films had "downer" endings, including "Count Yorga, Vampire" (the sequel, too, as I recall), "Dirty Mary Crazy Larry", "Tourist Trap" (last girl but totally bonkers), "The Fearless Vampire Killers" (dark comedy), "Get Carter", "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", "Bonnie and Clyde", "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", "The Love War", "On the Beach", "Don't Look Now", "Race with the Devil", "The Devil's Rain", "Beneath the Planet of the Apes", 'Escape from the Planet of the Apes", "Eye of the Devil", "The Stepford Wives", etc.

Even earlier, there were movies such as "Sunset Blvd./Boulevard" and "D.O.A" in the Fifties.'

These endings continue to show up, in which leads succumb or are headed that way, as in "Fallen" with Denzel Washington, "John Carpenter's The Thing", and "All That Jazz".

Frequently, evil does triumph.
