New Movie

I think after watching that movie, its about time to make a new one. I read the book and after reading thought it would be interesting to see the movie... so I did. I guess I kinda forgot that it was made in 1970 and expected it to be better or something. But now its 2006, over 30 years later, and I think its about time to make a new one.

I wouldnt mind seeing an updated version considering the origional wasnt really a classic or anything

reply

If they did a re-make, I guess it would be ok since the original isn't so popular. However, it would have to be really good and not cheesey (i.e., not modernized). It would have to take place in the 1950s (when it actually happened) and this is the cast I would prefer...

Nicky Cruz: Diego Luna
David Wilkerson: Hugh Laurie (the look he had in Stewart Little)
Rosa: Alice Braga
Israel: (Not sure)
Little Bo: (Not Sure)
Abdulla: (Not sure)
Big Cat: Mos Def
Hector Gomez: Anthony LaPaglia
Drug Pusher: Iggy Pop

reply

That would be cool. I agree Hugh Laurie would do good as David Wilkerson.

reply

Yeah.
You know the actor Diego Luna? He would be the perfect Nicky Cruz. I would say throw Wilmer Valderrama in there as Israel, but I don't think that would work for him.

I could see Wilmer playing Mingo. However, I doubt he'd play such a small role.

reply

He would be pretty good as Nicky Cruz. Wilmer Valderrama MIGHT be okay for that part.. but I dunno.

unfortunately, hollywood wouldn't touch such a candid christian story. they leave those to the dallas jenkins and stephen baldwins to do. i'm not sure this should be re-made. although i DEFINITELY believe more stories like this in this style and approach should be made more often. we slowly but surely getting there as christians.

Hi.

Hope you can answer me about this movie!

I think I saw it in the late 70´ or beginning of 80´.

Is this the story about a young man that arrives to (ney york) and sleeps in his car. And trying to get some boys and grils to start belive in god?

Hope I remeber it right.

But I´m sure that he sleept in his car on the street.

thanks in advance...

carl

Its about a man who is called by God to go to New York and reach out to the kids on the streets and lead them to God. Yes, he does sleep in his car a few times, but at first he didn't have anywhere to sleep. Does that help?

Thanks.

I´ve been searching for it for a long time now.
I remember it was a very good story in it, but how the acting is, I can´t remeber.

So now it´s just to start looking for it, now that I have the right Movie.

thanks.

Carl.

Yep. And to direct, I'd like to see Roman Coppola take charge. Have any of you seen the music videos he's directed for The Strokes?

reply

Nope

I just watched this movie again for the first time in probably over 20 years... it was a big part of my life in Jr. High & High School. I even got to see Nicky Cruz speak in person in 1976... very powerful and unforgetable night of my life.

ANYWAY... like a lot of old movies, it's POSSIBLE that this one would benefit from a new, high-quality re-make... but it could also ruin it if not done right. I would definitely want to see David Wilkerson and Nicky have a strong hand in it, to keep the spirit of the true story and the first movie.

Point I wanted to make, in relationship to this topic... I watched this with some of my kids who had never seen it before, and I was pretty scared that they would find it totally cheezy, hokey, whatever... and that I would be embarrased by a movie that was so dear to me so long ago. I was PLEASANTLY SURPRISED to find that there was very little about the movie that made me feel uncomfortable! I was so happy to find that the acting and the story, for the most part, felt just as good and powerful as it did 30 years ago. I really think it was annointed in it's making and carries that spirit even today.

Granted, the music was very dating and some of it (especially at the end when the voices come in strong with 'God loves Nicky Cru-u-uz') a bit corny (the only time when I cringed or laughed, really). But all in all, I still find it something I would share with others with a little caviat that they keep in mind when it was made ahead of time. I thought the cinematography was interesting and pretty good for it's time, as well.

And even my kids (my 17 yr old daughter, in particular), when it was all over said that, despite the dated quality, she thought it was a good movie. I could tell in her tone that she wasn't trying to appease me but really felt it.

Well, that's my 2 cents! :)

hi there. i read this book when i was a girl, way back in the early 70's, but i have never seen the film. seeing pat boone & eric estrada as the stars might make it interesting viewing. i came in here because i teach a small class of boys who are from gang families and who are looking forward to being fully fledged gang members, and i'm trying to find materials to use in class that also relate to a life beyond gangs. i've just read from gangs to grace, but it's not exactly what i'm looking for - i want to stay away from the whole god aspect if i can, lol. any suggestions? mountain girl, do you feel this film would still stand up in the face of year 2000 potential gang members? thanks everyone.

reply

this is one of the worst films I have ever seen, I think it deserves to be re made

I watched this movie earlier today for the first time. I'd read the book a few years ago, and my dad even let me read a comic book adaptation of the book before that. (Yes, there were Christian comics...)

One thing that really struck me was how flat Wilkerson's character is. We've no idea where he comes from until he says it, and he's just a generic preacher who wants to get to these gang-members. While I thought the film powerfully portrayed the violence of the gangs and drug use (well, for the time it was made, we couldn't expect "Trainspotting"), but I felt without Wilkerson's character being developed (as he is in the book, although it was written by Wilkerson as a memoir), there was no real strength behind him, and no contrast between his home and New York City. He just shows up like a guardian angel.

Now, if someone did want to make a new movie, I'd hope that they would explore Wilkerson's character and make the gangs' world just a bit grittier. I'd be all for it...

There is a Run Baby Run movie in production. It is being made by a small company though so I don't know how high quality it will be. Here is where you can find the website. http://www.runbabyrunmovie.com/

i cant wait for this film, i hope they keep it REAL and RAW, i loved the book

i also really liked the book “cross and the switchblade” but the film felt like they dumbed it down for the churchies takeing away the realness and the horror and hoplessnes that i loved in the book

i hope they make this film hardcore, make it R and keep it real, show blood and show the slums how they are, the guns and the drugs only that way can they really show the change that Nicky went thou because of findding Jesus

thats just imo

oh i really like the films poster too, it looks dark and moody and very down the earth, no bright red jackets here!
