Penelope's Hair!

This has intrigued me since I first saw this movie in 1983 when I was 17 - why does Penelope's hair go from light red, almost blonde, to dark auburn nearly brunette by the end of the film? I suppose something in the serum might have caused the hair colour change, but I figure it's symbolic, the old light is good dark is evil thing.

reply

I thought it was reminiscent of her mother.

Might have todo with the lighting where the shooting maybe :-) i did love the wild locks of reds though.

reply

Because the evil blood cells turned her hair dark. Nah, I'm just kidding. We all noticed it, I guess. I think they were just emphasizing that she went from a goody two shoes and instead turned into a wild tramp, so the director wanted to show her dark side 100%

reply

I think the answer is simpler than that!
She began experimenting with her motherĀ“s wigs, and so she kept on wearing those (at least is what I was thinking the whole time).

Although the idea of the bad cells changing the colour of her hair is good also!

reply

I agree, it was to show she was starting to become insane, like her mother.

reply

It also adds to the ambiguity as to whether the story is true or the product of the mind of an insane man.

But throughout it all, my motto was "Dignity! Always dignity!".

reply

I HATE movies that in the end are revealed to only be dreams. Cheating the audiences.
