My favorite line in this movie

This movie is my favorite John Wayne movie of all time(Just ahead of sons of katie elder). My favorite line in this movie is when Dern says to Wayne...."Do I look like a man that'd hit a small boy"(Or something to that effect). Waynes line after that is my favorite("You Look Like the Vermon Ridden Son Of A Bitch That You Are"). Hehehe....love that line.

My favorite line is when asked by Slim Pcikens' character if he would consider boys, the Duke responds, "Why not my mother in Syler City, she's only 92" or something to that effect.

I'm not sure if this is my favorite line in this movie (I like them all, but never really had a favorite), but I have been thinking of this line from it alot lately, and repearting it to myself often. It is when he and Mr. Nightlinger are watching the cowboys play the guitar around the campfire one night, and Mr. Andersen says, "My oldest boy would have been close to 40-middle aged-if he'd lived". That is because I myself am approaching 40, and will be it next March 5. I was born on March 5, 1968, and was 4 when this movie came out, then 11 when I first saw it (June 11, 1979, the night after John Wayne died). But yes, I guess 40 is middle age, and this is the most relevant movie line for me at this time.

My favourite is when he's about to fight and he says, "I've had my back broke once, and my hip twice, and on my worst day, I could beat the hell outta you."

reply

I have two and they are both delivered by Roscoe Lee Brown

Talking to the madame "Well, I have the inclination, the maturity, and the wherewithal... but unfortunately, I don't have the time."

Praying before he's about to hanged "I regret trifling with married women. I'm thoroughly ashamed at cheating at cards. I deplore my occasional departures from the truth. Forgive me for taking your name in vain, my Saturday drunkenness, my Sunday sloth. Above all, forgive me for the men I've killed in anger...(then looking at the bad guy)... and those I am about to.

There's so many good lines in this film, but I have to agree with sstovall-1 about the "forgive me for the men I've killed in anger and those I am about to" line......that makes me laugh--definitely one of the best.

YES! Nightlinger has all the good lines. And the voice of Roscoe Lee Brown is priceless. This movie, for some reason, is so special to me. I saw it at a drive-in movie. I fell in love with most of the boys in the movie (I was born in 1964). It is my all time fav. John Wayne movie, hands down. Other great quotes...

Forgive me for taking your Name in vain, my Saturday drunkenness, my Sunday sloth. Above all, forgive me for the men I've killed in anger and for those I am about to." "This may seem a lonesome place to leave him, but he is not alone because many of his kind rest here with him. The prairie was like a mother to Mr. Andersen. He belonged to her. She cared for him while he lived and she is nursing him while he sleeps." [Roscoe Lee Browne (Jebediah Nightlinger)]

"Boys are always guilty of something nasty. What could it be this time, I wonder?" [Roscoe Lee Browne (Jebediah Nightlinger)]
"Now this is the way it's gonna be: I'm a man and you're boys. Not cowmen, not by a damn sight, nothing but cowboys just like the word says. And I'm gonna remind you of it every single minute of every day and night." [John Wayne (Wil Andersen)]

That Roscoe Lee Browne quote has ALWAYS Been my favorite. My favorite John Wayne quote was from "True Grit" and it wasn't just the line, it was the expression of surprise and total anger when he yells to Robert Duval, "FILL YOUR HANDS YOU SON OF A BITCH!"

The Cowboys was a great film and still is. John Wayne is one of my heroes.
