Misconception of Filming Location

I always see references to the movie moslty being filmed in Century City, a funky shopping mall kind of place at the edge of Beverly Hills, but the truth is that much of the movie was filmed at two locations in Southern California...Century City and the Social Sciences buildings at the University of California, Irvine. Everything still looks pretty much the same around Century City, but the campus site is massively different...the buildings are still there and occupied, though.

Oddly enough, I've worked at both places...Century City for about a month and UCI long enough for Caesar to have been born and grown up to the age he was when the movie was set.

There's a photo of the Social Sciences building used at the beginning of Conquest taken from almost the same angle on my Prius website...it's oddly familiar:

I think the same architect designed both sites, which are located about 45 miles apart in Southern California. I love the buildings, and I have neat architect's oroginal watercolor renderings from the pre-build design phase of the project!

The architect was William L. Pereira. I am a huge fan of his and I have the book on him by James Steele.

The location made this movie especially creepy for me - as a Los Angeles native - since it was so familiar. I guess this is why famous landmarks and New York is frequently destroyed in movies - there's a sense of familiarity.

Just my two cents ...

Interesting.

This brings up a problem because in the original, and its sequel, takes place in NY. How did they get ball the way to California?
