The plague that wiped out the cats and dogs?

I wonder if the plague that wiped out the cats and dogs in 1983 that Armando was referring to was the result of Cornelius and Zira's arrival on year 10 years earlier.

reply

Cornelius and Zira arrived in 1973, 10 years before the plauge. And Armando says it was brought back by an astronaut.

reply

It's possible. Their blood was painted all over the ship deck, which could've contained the virus handed down through the centuries. An animal could've picked up the virus after the bodies were taken away.

reply

Armando says it was brought back to Earth "by one of the astronauts". Technically, this could include the three chimps themselves, when they arrived in 1973. They were astronauts - or apeonauts.

reply

It's possible.

This never crossed my mind.. but there are diseases, such as PARVO, which are so incredibly contagious that you can spread it to your puppies once you touched another infected one. The dogs never have to interact... it can be carried on your hands/clothing.

VERY VERY possible! Could explain the limited number of lifeforms we see on the Ape Planet

Rainy, your posts are terribly interesting!
How I think in reality, they probably didn't feature other lifeforms due to budget constraints and to avoid introducing more plot holes by showing other species that did not get affected by evolution (if we are to believe that you can evolve in 2000 years, in these movies) or by the nuclear fallout.

reply

We didn't see enough of the ape culture to know whether they kept pets. And the only wildlife we were able to see was birds. They probably had everything else - rodents, deer, whatever...

reply

Not that it makes a difference, but little Cornelius had a pet squirrel in Battle.

reply

There were rabbits also, that McDonald was given permission to shoot and cook.

This plague is something I find odd-how did it only kill dogs and cats? I can understand a plague that kills all of one or the other but both? And no other species? I know it's supposed to be science fiction and not science fact but that is rather strange.

reply

Well, here's a bit of a fan insertion to try to overcome this issue (no, it's non-canon, non-official, etc; it's totally my own theory, nothing more). Maybe it could be said that the plague affected members of the order Carnivora (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnivora), which includes both cats and dogs, as well as other canine and feline species (and bears, raccoons, seals). I mean, you don't see these animals in Conquest, Battle, Planet or Beneath, so maybe such an answer is within the bounds of plausible, even if non-canon. The mention of cats and dogs was merely to tell how the apes became used as pets, so maybe there was no need to mention the other animals that would be affected. Mind you, you see a dog in the TV series, so if you're one who feels that the TV series fits with the films (I don't), then it won't work.

Another answer is that it suited the script and requires suspension of disbelief. Not the sexy answer, but it's usually the right one. ;)

Yup-I always figure as much. One can dissect any movie to death to the point where you wouldn't like it anymore. And if one gets to that point then there's no reason to watch any movies ever again. Might as well just sit back and enjoy and not be too over analytical.😃

Well said. Some seem to just want to beat the fun out of movie for everyone else.

to my own fan thinking, I absolutely feel the plague was brought back by the three Ape-onauts. I feel it also made apes gradually larger and smarter, making them better for humans to use and also made humans less active and more complacent. Then it mutated (as diseases often do) and killed the dogs and cats. Because the government spent YEARS hush-hushing the entire Ape-onaut event (because you know, if this was common knowledge, people would be a little leery about taking apes into their homes and teaching them skills), the cause of the plague was said to be a more generic "astronaut" (still the truth, without being the whole truth).

Here is the clip from Conquest: http://www.potamediaarchive.com/ThePlague.htm

Armando says that the plague was brought back by an Astronaut 8 years earlier. Is there a scene I missed that says different?

reply

No. The illness that affected pets wasn't given a name just discribed as an effect that killed them off and they burned the bodies in fire pits.

It would've made more sense for humanity to whindle down in number by it and lead too the policestate we saw. It would make sense why Apes would be used as Labour to help out rebuilding society and later on conquer the planet
