I wouldn't be surprised if it was never released, at least while Mick is alive. There are some things in this film that could still be embarrassing to Mick. But the main thing is the performances. With the exception of the medley of Uptight and Satisfaction with Stevie Wonder and his band, all of the performances are mediocre at best, some are awful. The reason why "Rock & Roll Circus" stayed shelved for almost 30 years was because Mick wasn't happy with their performances, and those were AWESOME. In this film it seems like the cameras only seemed to roll when they were playing and singing terribly. "Ladies And Gentlemen... The Rolling Stones" shows that they had some really great performances on that tour, but not in this film.
I could honestly care less if it's ever released. I'm a Stones fan, but I think this is a terrible film. It was an attempt to recreate D. A. Pennebaker's "Don't Look Back", but unlike Bob Dylan in that film, the Stones gave Robert Frank very little to work with. The most memorable scenes in the film are all care of the roadies, groupies, and various other hangers on. The best the Stones could muster was sitting around. Seriously, a 5 minute scene of Bianca Jagger fussing with a new dress while Mick talks on the phone leading to the climax where they sit around and listen to a windup music box is not entertainment to me. Neither is watching some nasty looking heroine junkie groupie getting pounded by an even nastier roadie. We already have a good Stone documentary from a few years earlier in "Gimme Shelter" and a good performance video from this tour in "Ladies And Gentlemen... The Rolling Stones", I don't see this film as needing to be released. Unless you like to watch heroine junkies do their thing or nasty people with 70's grooming standards have awkward, pasty, very unsexy sex.
