Why would Edie Make this Film?

I loved the film, but I wonder why would Edie ever make it? She lays herself bare to the world. She's basically saying: here I am, I'm a total mess, an alcoholic, a drug addict, I can't even think straight and my mind is so screwed up that I live in a constant fog of sustance abuse, I, also, have recreational sex with anyone for the sake of it.

To me, it was exploitation, degradation and self-immolation. Now, I'm not saying that I don't appreciate the film. I personally like Edie and I'm fascinated by the 60's and that entire Warhol scene, but it was self-exploitative. I wonder if she was fully consious of what she was doing to herself? It's obvious that her family must have given up on her. Despite their disfunctionality, they must have been mortified by the film and everything that Edie said about them, especially the dad's and brothers alleged sexual molestation of her.

I think of the line from "Like a Rolling Stone" which was allegedly written about her even though Dylan denies it: "You're invincible now, you have no secrets to conceal!"
