Indeed. This movie deserves to be seen again and again. One of the best works by el maestro Ripstein.

Obviously Ripstein's dark and sordid realism is not for everyone. Certainly not for those who only likes pinky movies with the usual trite happy end.

What is harder to believe is that this films is (loosely) based on a true story that happened back in the 50's.

As you can see, reality is way more bizarre and extreme than fiction.

This movie deserves more recognition. Probably my favorite Ripstein movie, it's a close call between this and El Lugar Sin Límites. Profundo Carmesí comes close.

EDIT: I'm watching it again for the third time right now and I think this may not only be my favorite Ripstein movie, but my favorite mexican movie overall.

I haven't watched this in a couple of years. Thinking about watching it later tonight. Got my DVD copy last time I was in Mexico City.

Agreed a bit about being depressing (a little of sadness stayed with me a couple of days after I saw Castillo de la Pureza), I want to add this, I had an incredible experience watching this movie along with El Angel Exterminador.
