TCM just played this
It just aired after the Friday Noir program, preceded by the original version The Burglar with Dan Duryea. (I never caught the connection so different are the two in every way.) Nice wide-screen with minimal wear once the opening credits ended. It's a very underrated movie. Sharif and Belmondo at their peak have great chemistry. Belmondo is the only actor who can pull off talking while eating. The stunts are great, the technicals are well-done and the film is photographed in a way that's visually understandable, unlike many films today that are shot with all close-ups and machine-gun editing that renders them incomprehensible. Verneuil knew how to tell and show a story. I'd love to read about the making of this picture but I doubt if an article like this exists. The rocks in the dump truck that get spilled down the pit along with Belmondo could not have been real.
