During the intermission in the middle of the Jarmon-McKay debate, someone hands Jarmon a folded note. Jarmon reads it, frowns slightly, and slips it into his pocket. McKay notices, and appears curious and puzzled. What did the note say, and what effect did it have? My only guess is that it said Jarmon was slipping in the polls, leading him to take a more aggressive tack. But why would anyone give him bad news during a debate?
Xchar, it's been a long time since I watched "The Candidate", but the way I remember it, the note being passed to Jarmon was meant to illustrate the way in which Jarmon relies on his handlers to tell him what to say, and also the way in which he and his handlers rely on secrecy to communicate the simplest of messages. I don't think the movie ever tries to explain what the note said, but we can infer that it was a handler telling Jarmon to get "tougher" with McKay.
