Who else think this is better than The Godfather?
Because I do.
It's been my favorite film for years, and I'd personally prefer it over THE GODFATHER, but only if forced to choose. I think, however, both films represent the epitomy of film making in 1972 and will hold up for years to come. (Each film reinvented its respective genre: CABARET turned the movie musical format on it's ear, and THE GODFATHER, along with GODFATHER II a couple of years later, took the gangster film to Shakespearean-like heights.)

Wow, I couldn’t have said it better! Great comment, if there were a like button I would press it.
OBVIOUSLY most people posting on the Cabaret board are going to say it's better than the Godfather. Post this message on Godfather board, people probably won't have even heard of Cabaret these days let alone seen it.
Cabaret is fun and serious and gay and spooky and colourful and crazy so to me personally it's a trump card to me. But definitely the minority. Godfather is the best film of all time, according to imdb voters.
This movie is a joke compared to Godfather.
I Said he'l flip ya, flip ya for real.
Cabaret is for me the best motion picture of all time. no match for any don.
shareIt's definitely up there with The Godfather. I probably like them both equally.

The Godfather had way more character development than Cabaret. Cabaret has one and half interesting characters Sally Bowles and the Emcee. The rest of the characters are dull and one dimensional. Cabaret is good . The Godfather is a movie masterpiece.
Force me to choose and I'll take The Godfather every time...but why choose? I agree with those who said they're apples and oranges. For conversation's sake though, absolutely - The Godfather.
"You will not hear me scream!" "I Will.
But it is not your screams I want.
Only your life."
because I am the kind of person who likes (good) musicals and doesn't particularly like violent films. That said, 1973 (I was 5, so I saw them much later!) was a good year for movies and as far as plot, characters (likeable and not so much) directing, filming etc. . . both are excellent movies. I guess some people like apples, and others oranges. It doesn't necessarily mean one is "better". In fact, sometimes you want and apple and sometimes you want an orange (but if you want something truly light and refreshing, these are NOT the movies you need to see!).
share1972 was a bang-up year for movies. "The Godfather" is a masterpiece.
However, "Cabaret" simply floored me when I saw it as a teenager. "The Godfather" merely impressed me a great deal.
I was thrilled when "Cabaret" kept winning Oscar after Oscar in 1973. If "The Godfather" had been released a year before or after, there is no doubt that "Cabaret" would have won Best Picture.
It came very close anyway. Back when Oscar meant something, "Cabaret" won 8 Oscars out of 10 nominations. That is still a record to this day for a non-Best Picture winner and I highly doubt, in the current Hollywood climate (the ridiculous "10 nominee" Best Picture option), any movie will match that achievement.
Cabaret is waaaay better than the Godfather, but not better than the Godfather part 2
shareI liked both movies, but Cabaret might have been better if, instead of singing "Tomorrow Belongs To Me," they could have sung "C'e La Luna Mezz'o Mare." ;)
I"ve always felt that if The Godfather had made its initial target release date of December 1971, it would have won the Best Picture Oscar for 1971, beating The French Connection, and clearing the way for Cabaret to win Best Picture of 1972.
But that didn't happen.
And The Godfather was the best picture of 1972. Better and more popular and more sweeping in scope and lasting through the decades than Cabaret.
"more sweeping in scope and lasting through the decades than Cabaret"
I disagree.
Cabaret might be the most important film made.
